Announcing... Teams Gorgon and Griffin!   12/14/2017

Your third and final snowball fight is just just over a day away, and your special team common rooms are now open in the Courtyard! For this fight, Hufflepuff and Slytherin will form team Gorgon, while Gryffindor and Ravenclaw will form team Griffin! The official topics in your common rooms will unlock tomorrow, but you're very welcome to use the space now to decide on a strategy, ask the staff for clarification on any rules, and just get to know each other if you don't already.

  1. Is it possible to travel from Ireland to the UK by train? or is it just by air and sea?

I'm asking because my OC Deirdre is Irish and muggle born (she lives in southwest Ireland, the town of KIlarney.). I want her family to spend some time with the Weasleys for Christmas for her first few years of Hogwarts (1984-1986)

  2. There’s three ways I can write a certain scene between my two dating characters.

Scenario one: They can break up on good terms.

Scenario two: The boy proposes but the girl says no since they are too young to get married (He’s eighteen and she’s almost eighteen, they just graduated from Hogwarts)

Scenario Three: They have a short engagement but something happens to him.

Scenario Four: They have a shot gun wedding (she’s not pregnant or anything) in a muggle church (they’re both muggle borns) but figure out soon enough that they weren’t meant to be married. Then they break up on good terms.

  3. So, my newest OC Deidre Tremlett has a muggle male best friend who wants to be a cop (or bobby) when he tells her she's concerned for him but doesn't react the way she reacts when Charlie tells her he wants to work with dragons. Deidre basically reacts the way I think Molly reacted to her son wanting to work with dragons. Is there a term for that? Is this what a Tsundere is?

  4. How would a great niece of Myrtle find out about her great aunt and how would she react?

The character is named Cheryl Warren, she's the same age as Charlie and my main OC Deidre Tremlett.

    1. Margaret

      Margaret

To find out about Myrtle, she could simply ask her. I know Myrtle doesn't have the full story and she would probably find it pretty hard to find out the whole story of the Chamber of the Secrets, but the trio managed so she could do something similar. Alternatively, her mother/father could tell her, but I am guessing you don't want that to happen.

How she'd react really depends on her character and how much she finds out. If she finds out that Hagrid was expelled for opening the Chamber,  I would imagine she'd be angry he was given a job at Hogwarts afterwards and she'd probably be wary or even really frightened of him.

Otherwise, it could vary from her being determined to solve the mystery to her being really angry at Hogwarts for covering the whole thing up and possibly even dropping out of school or being concerned for whichever parent is Myrtle's sibling or being simply curious or being angry at her parents for keeping it from her or even not really caring - it all happened before she was born and she never knew Myrtle; it might not be any more of an issue for her than it would be if Myrtle had not been related to her - or it could be a source of embarrassment (I'm related to that weird ghost that everybody laughs at) or annoyance (she'll probably plague me if she knows we're related). It all depends on your character's personality and values.

I kind of write Cheryl like her great aunt was smart and quiet. Though, I don't think Myrtle had any friends but Cheryl has a best friend in my OC Deidre and acquaintances with Charlie Weasley and Tonks through Deidre.

I may give her little crush on Deidre's older brother Donaghan who is a year older than them and also a Ravenclaw.

Maybe there's no issue when they're in school but somehow she finds out during Harry's second year but I don't know how. Though, if I do that I wouldn't have a plot for a during Hogwarts story it would end up being a post Hogwarts story.

  5. What's an uncommon subject of the six main subjects for a witch/wizard to be good at?

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

Herbology is another one along with Astronomy. I'm looking for  a subject my muggle born character Deidre Tremlett to be good at.

    3. Slytherinchica08

      Slytherinchica08

I feel like history is the only one I don't know of someone being exceptionally good at. I know Neville is great at Herbology.

    4. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

Yeah, but she's in Charlie's year and never interacts with Neville but I do see your point. I've already planned on her not pursuing a magical career like her older brother Donaghan (the bassist for the Weird Sisters)

  6. Do you think Myrtle has any descendants?

Maybe she had a sister or brother getting ready to attend Hogwarts the year or two after her death?

    3. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

I had the idea of a muggle sibling a couple years older than her. The sibling would have a child born in the late forties or early fifties. That child wouldn't not be magical much to the family's relief. That child would get married and have a magical child who is accepted to Hogwarts.

    4. abhorsen.

      abhorsen.

      I think that's totally plausible!

  7. As evil as it is, do you think it's possible that there's a potion that causes a woman to have a miscarriage?

    1. victoria_anne

      victoria_anne

Definitely, I think something as simple as raspberry leaves can cause that, so a potion definitely would

    2. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

I had the idea that the potion wouldn't work and the parents of the father of the child plan for the girl to get into some type of accident instead (he proposed to her a few days after she told him she was expecting his child. He faked happiness and ran to his parents and told them he didn't want to have to marry her and be a father.)

  8. Is it possible that Newt Scamander's mum is still alive in the early 2000's? Would someone inherit her business of breeding hippogriffs?

  9. If the mother and father of a child are dead. The father and the father's family never knew the mother was pregnant. The mother's immediate family is also dead. She has an American cousin who could take care of her or would she go to the equivalent of an orphanage?

    2. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

Technically its the mother's cousin who takes cares of the child. So. it's the child's first cousin once removed.

    3. abhorsen.

      abhorsen.

Ahh, okay. Yeah, I definitely wouldn't have a hard time believing that, if that way the way you wanted to go, though I'd also believe it if the mother's cousin didn't want to take on that responsibility.

    4. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

I'm going with the American cousin raising her in America for  until roughly around 2001. Either she quits her teaching job (she teaches Care of Magical Creatures) to raise the child or the child grows up at the school for a few years, or she still quits her job but she goes to work for the American Ministry .

  10. How do you think Molly would react to having a granddaughter from Fred?

Fred is dead and so is the mother (Verity). So, the little girl is raised by her mother's American cousin who is the same age as Charlie.

    1. abhorsen.

      abhorsen.

I think she'd be thrilled if she knew about it early on, but if it took awhile for her to hear about it, she'd be both happy and really heartbroken that she wasn't there for her grandchild's life.

    2. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

Fred never knew Verity was pregnant with his child. It was somewhat of a one night stand in late February 1998 - early March 1998. Though, I would have to say that Verity went into hiding with them.

  11. If a blonde and a redhead were to have a child. Would the child have blond or red hair? or maybe a strawberry blonde?

    1. abhorsen.

      abhorsen.

It could really go either way - whatever you prefer. ^_^

    2. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

Thanks. I was curious I might give Verity (the helper at WWW) a child with Fred and she supposedly has blond hair.

    3. abhorsen.

      abhorsen.

Yeah, you can definitely go either way there. :)

  12. Is it weird for a seventeen-year-old boy to fancy a fourteen almost fifteen year old girl (the girl in question is his best female friend's little sister). He won't act on the feelings until she's of age, though.

      abhorsen.

I personally think that it's a little weird, and it'd probably feel weird if it's his best friend's little sister... but also that it's definitely not so weird that it doesn't happen. I'd just make sure to address the differences in life experiences - like, for example, if he's working and she's still in school, he should probably feel slightly strange (which doesn't necessarily mean not doing it, just feeling a bit odd).

    3. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

He discusses this with my OC and he thinks he's a weirdo for liking her but she tells him if it was any other seventeen-year-old guy who fancied her sister he would end up in the hospital wing.

    4. abhorsen.

      abhorsen.

That sounds about right, then. :P

  14. What's a good name for an American male cousin of Cormac Mclaggen?

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

I went with Byron but that might be a little old fashioned but Cormac is old fashioned too.

  15. I can't decide who I want Charlie and Wendy to run into when they go out to karaoke with her team in the USA which includes her slightly younger twin brother. It's between her estranged mother (they haven't  seen each other since her youngest brother came out as gay before his seventh year in 1994) and her ex-fiancé (they've been estranged for just as long).

  16. Do you think Ilevrmorny students would be taught British Wizarding World History?

Do you think Ilvermorny would have an equivalent to the Triwizard Tournament?

      PaulaTheProkaryote

I would assume that it would be an elective style course and it would be very american-centric still (at least that's how my world history classes were). Somehow I think we'd have even more outrageous tournaments too because go big or go home.

    3. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

I see it as an elective as well. Just because the founders of Ilvermorny were Irish and British.

As for the equivalent to the Triwizard Tournament, it would probably he the Brazilian school (Castlebrox) and  another school.

I was curious because my newest OC Wendy Brown and her siblings went to Ilvermorny.

    4. Margaret

      Margaret

Probably only in passing. I think they might be taught about the rise of Voldemort because a Western English speaking country being taken over by a dictator in the late 20th century is kind of a big deal and there is a warning there about pureblood supremacy, but I would imagine it would only be big issues like that.

After all, there are many countries in the world and it would hardly be possible for Ilvermorny to teach about them all.

I am a history teacher in Ireland and for the Junior Cert. (our equivalent of O.W.L.S.), the topics covered are: the Stone Age, Bronze Age, the Celts in Ireland and early Christian Ireland, the Romans (or Egyptians or Greeks but Romans are by far the most common choice), Medieval Europe (which is kind of vague but mostly based on Britain), the Renaissance, the Age of Exploration, the Protestant Reformation, the Plantations (basically the conquest of Ireland by the British), the American War of Independence, the French Revolution, the 1798 Rebellion, the Agricultural Revolution in Britain, the Industrial Revolution in Britain, the Irish Famine of the 1840s, then the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, the Civil War, Irish politics since independence, Northern Ireland and the "Troubles", the rise of Fascism, the rise of Communism, World War II, the Cold War and Social Change in Ireland in the 20th century.

So there is quite a bit about other countries' history but they are either large events (World War II and the Cold War - while Ireland might not have been involved, they both had the potential to affect everybody regardless of whether or not they took part) or else had a specific impact on Ireland (the American War of Independence and the French Revolution helped to inspire the 1798 Rebellion) and to be honest, can be a bit out of context. Oh, I forgot the Versailles Treaty is taught as a cause of World War II, without World War I being on the course.

  17. Every year I watch the Halloweentown series, I get the plot bunny for a Harry Potter Crossover. But how would that work they're more than likely American (they would go to Ilevrmorny) and their magic system is quite different.

  18. Do you think Chocolate Frog Cards are only sold in the British Wizarding World? I wanted my American OC's five-year-old nephew to collect them.

    1. wandlessmagic

      wandlessmagic

I would think so, perhaps they recently went international and there are some cards sold exclusively to Americans?

    2. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

I know they have cards of the American National Quidditch Team members.

I think they could well be international. Or America could have something similar but slightly different.

  19. Is it possible for a woman to have a miscarriage because of stress?

    1. clevernotbrilliant
    2. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

I was curious because I wanted my OC Wendy to have a miscarriage due to the stress of having her mum not accepting the fact that she is pregnant and her brother coming out of the closet which ends in her mum separating from her father.

  20. Degrassi

Degrassi. Is one of my favorite shows. I started watching religiously every Friday at 5:00pm (I think that's time slot) in my sophomore/junior year of high school in 2005/2006. It was Peter's first season. Emma, J.T, Terri, Marco, Ellie and Sean were some of my favourite characters in the earlier generations. I also love Clare, Adam, Eli, Maya, Declan, Connor, Anya, and Sav. From the next class, I like Frankie, Winston, Lola, and Shay
  21. Rick Riordan-verse

I watched the first movie before buying the first book. Though, I couldn't get into it at first. That was I think 2010. I saw the second movie and got into them again. I marathoner all his series two years ago to prepare for the first Magnus Chase Book. Hereoes of Olympus > Percy Jackson > Kane Chronicles. I think it's because I was never too into Egyptian Mythology.
  22. What are some reasons a mother can be estranged from her three children and husband?

I'm trying to figure out the backstory of my OC Wendy's immediate family.

The two oldest kids are adults when she becomes estranged while their youngest brother is in his last year at Ilvermorny.

    3. TidalDragon

      TidalDragon

It would probably be helpful to know some things about the mother in order to answer more fully, though I like a number of the suggestions that were made above, even in the time-frame you listed. Some others that may fit:

She interferes in their marriages and relationships causing them to fail.

She doesn't support their career/life ambitions.

Their behavior/lifestyle undermines her ambitions (perhaps she's in politics or some other profession where public perception, including of family, is very important).

The kids leave the religion she raised them in and she refuses to speak to them as a result.

One (1) of the kids comes out in some way - perhaps the one (1) still in school - and she rejects them while the others support their sibling.

The youngest gets a classmate pregnant and they're keeping/not keeping the baby.

They've moved away from their hometown (and the youngest plans to) leaving her feeling abandoned.

Hope some of the ideas offered help you out!

    4. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

I had touched the idea that the youngest brother comes out to his family besides his older sister (she already knows he's gay). The father and the other brother accept him readily but the mom has a hissy fit.

I do like the pregnancy angle too. The OC could  unexpectedly get pregnant from her Ilvermorny sweetheart and tells her family. The dad is thrilled to have another grandchild (the twin brother is already married with a two year old daughter) while again the mom has a hissy fit. The stress of all this makes her have a miscarriage (Although, I'm not sure if stress can cause a miscarriage.)

  23. I'm thinking that my OC Wendy has had a few miscarriages before. But I don't want it to seem like Charlie is the 'magic touch' if you may.

    1. toomanycurls

      toomanycurls

It probably comes down to how you present the subject. If it's "omg, Wendy had years and years of infertility and miscarriages and one night with Charlie led to a healthy full term pregnancy" then it'd be a bit weird. Having a few miscarriages in her past could realistically present as a concern when she gets pregnant and quite disconnected from the new partner factor.

    2. Hufflepuffbookworm1990

      Hufflepuffbookworm1990

It wouldn't be one night but a series of nights. I had the idea that her ex-partner (I'm leaning towards her ex-husband ) didn't really want kids so he dosed her with a potion that made her miscarry (but that seems too harsh) then blamed her for the miscarriages and left her because of it.

  24. Is it believable that the Holyhead Harpies would play an American team, the Fitchburg Finches?

I was curious because another new main OC of mine Wendy Brown,  (yes she's the cousin of Lavender Brown) plays seeker for the Fitchburg Finches. I had Finches play the Harpies in early 2000 so she could meet Charlie.

I definitely think so, especially if it was a friendly match.

Given that London have been known to play in the All-Ireland (Gaelic) Football championship and Ireland play Australia at "International Rules" (sone kind of mix of Gaelic Football and Australian Rules Football), I think this is extremely credible.
