Your third and final snowball fight is just just over a day away, and your special team common rooms are now open in the Courtyard! For this fight, Hufflepuff and Slytherin will form team Gorgon, while Gryffindor and Ravenclaw will form team Griffin! The official topics in your common rooms will unlock tomorrow, but you're very welcome to use the space now to decide on a strategy, ask the staff for clarification on any rules, and just get to know each other if you don't already.

  1. Holiday and Diversity Writing Challenge Happy holidays, HPFT! It's a wonderful time of year, and the prefects and staff have been collaborating on a writing challenge for the month of December! The theme is Holidays and Diversity. You can write about these topics using any holiday and/or any take on any diversity you'd like. You must use one of the five "prompts" listed below as the first line in your story. Here are some other general rules: Your story must be posted on HPFT's archive. Any fandom or OF will be accepted. A new chapter on an existing WIP is okay as long as the chapter fits the parameters of the challenge. You may update your prompt to fit the POV, tense, etc. of your story. Please include "Holiday and Diversity Writing Challenge" to the story summary. Please specify your House in the story metadata. Entries may be between 500 and 8,000 words long Your submissions are due with a link posted in this thread by December 22nd 11:59 PM GMT. You must be 18+ as of December 1st 2017 in order to win (see legal info below). However, you can enter as an under-18, but please specify in your post / to a staff member in a PM that you are under 18. First Line Prompts It's not every day your world ends. What you have to understand is that it sounded like a good idea at the time. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be laughing about today for years to come. Nothing--not even the very sun falling from the sky--would ruin today...nothing. I never realized how much I love the scent of peppermint. Prizes! We are giving away Harry Potter House themed notebooks! As such, we're going to pick a winner from each house to win a notebook/folder combo. All entries will be evaluated by staff and prefects with the winners being announced January 5th. We'll be judging based on the following criteria Overall quality (25%) Integration of first line (20%) Use of theme (30%) Spelling/Grammar (15%) Originality (10%) A little more on the legal end Contest The distribution of the above-listed merchandise to members shall be made according to each participant's performance in a writing contest set by the Prefects, listed here. This contest shall take place over the entirety of the month of December (the "Prefects' Writing Challenge") and all entries shall be judged by at least two (2) of the Prefects. Participants will be required to submit at least one (1) piece of writing conforming to the requirements in the post announcing the Prefects' Writing Challenge on the HPFT Forums (the "Entry"). Winners shall be determined by the quality of writing as judged by the Prefects according to factors including, but not limited to: characterization, creativity, fit to guidelines/prompts, flow, grammar, mechanics, and plot. Eligibility Unfortunately, legal requirements force us to restrict eligibility to individuals who are at least eighteen (18) years old on or before 1 December 2017. There is no restriction on a member's country or state of residence provided the age requirement is met. In order to win, an otherwise eligible member must submit at least one (1) Entry to the Prefects' Writing Challenge. Prizes Prize winners shall be determined from each of Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin (individually, the "House"; collectively, the "Houses"). The top scoring member of each House shall receive one (1) prize package irrespective of overall scoring or placement of any individual Entry. Notwithstanding the foregoing, if no member of a particular House submits an Entry, no prize will be awarded to that House and if no member of any of the Houses submits an Entry, no prizes of any kind will be awarded. Winners must supply a mailing address upon notification of award in order to allow shipping. Said address will not be used by HPFT for any other purpose. Participants who submit at least one (1) Entry will also be eligible for nominal titles ("Honors") irrespective of whether their House performance entitles them to receive a prize under the first paragraph of this section. Such Honors shall be awarded in rank-order based on overall score and irrespective of House. At least two (2) Honors shall be awarded: Champion and Runner-Up. Should the total the number of Entries exceed six (6), Honors for Third Place and/or Honorable Mention may be awarded in the Prefects' discretion, with a limit of one (1) Honorable Mention. In the event that the Third Place Honor is used, the Champion and Runner-Up Honors shall convert to First Place and Second Place respectively. Governing Law This contest shall be governed by the laws of the United States and the State of North Carolina.
  2. Archive Wish List

So, I recall this being brought up. Maybe you PMed to someone who told me (or PMed me and I haven't worked on it). You can filter by Story Type which gets you the general length but not a hard sort on word count. I'll look into how difficult that sorting is to do. @Dojh167 -- I looked into this and it's pretty messy. Each iteration of the search result sorting/filtering references a different page with another page giving the sort by options. It's a tangled mess and will take a lot of time/effort to fully unwind.
  3. Article: We're Still Here - Natives in America I've read a few articles which criticize the appropriation by JKR of names, legends, and cultural aspects from marginalized groups. I always feel it's a difficult thing to be inspired by a culture and want to use it in your work. On one hand it would feel a bit weird to not have Native American influence on magic in the Americas but it seems like there was a huge gap between the pre-colonial magic in North America and the magical government in Fantastic Beasts. Should she have hired a cultural expert on ways to use Native American history in her work. There's also the argument that this wasn't hers to capitalize on, not with there being actual Native American stories she's eclipsing and people who aren't financially benefitting from having their culture put on display.
  4. Archive Wish List

#1. I can look into that. I'm pretty annoyed with how that page renders too. #2. I think we had it set up like that but people were annoyed because they didn't always have the right fandoms selected to show all the right ships. I'll work with @abhorsen. to see if we can work on a better way to do that. So, I recall this being brought up. Maybe you PMed to someone who told me (or PMed me and I haven't worked on it). You can filter by Story Type which gets you the general length but not a hard sort on word count. I'll look into how difficult that sorting is to do.

To familiarize yourself with the site functionality, please read the FAQ/Knowledge Base housed as entries in the Staff Blog.
  11. Justice League DCU

I saw Justice League last night! Overall, I liked it. One thing that really surprised me (more in my reaction than the event) was I thought Flash was great and I loved his awkward comedy. My husband was kind of meh about the comedy in the movie. Re: batman I'm probably going to see this again and will have more thoughts.
  12. Lightning Love - toomanycurls

I'm going to work on Lightning Love (M) for Nano! It's a love triangle story where Lily Luna Potter, Lysander Scamander, Hugo Weasley, and two other (OC) boarders are living with Molly Weasley I at the Burrow. It's a follow on to Pure Intentions/True Romance and has cameos from the same characters from PI/TR with a heavy theme of following your heart and learning what happens when you don't pursue love. aka everyone is getting a heartbreak. Hugo has a story arc about self acceptance and bullying There's at least one death. It'll be fun.
  13. Dumbledore's Ardour

It's hard to get people out of their headcanon for certain characters, especially one like Dumbledore. He's controversial and has become even moreso as the fanbase of Harry Potter has gotten older. I do tend to disregard people who have a completely different take on a character and aren't paying attention to how I'm writing someone or just don't get the character/story.
  14. PP: Would You Rather? MC Edition

Lily would answer: always hot because I need a warm, sunny spot in my room. Would you rather always eat good food alone or blah food with people.
  15. PP: Music

  17. Cluedo! Postmortem

Hello HPFanficTalk Fam! Last weekend we rallied together to solve the tragic muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurder of Tasha! We had many clues which included: Murder Scenes: Suspects: Weapons: Wow!! That was quite a lot of clues to go through! In Round One, correctly sleuthed that toomanycurls used a 1st Year's Botched Potion to off Tasha in the Quidditch Pitch! In Round Two, correctly determined that Veritaserum27 offed Tasha with a 1st Year's Botched Potion in the Library. In Round Three, correctly deduced that TidalDragon used a Crystal Ball to slay Tasha in Greenhouse Three! In Round Four, correctly suspected that paulatheprokaryote blasted Tasha with a Wand in the Hufflepuff Common Room. With so much murrrrrrrder and intrigue -- where did each house land for this event?? The Results: First place: with 200 points! Second place: with 150 points! Third place: with 100 points! Fourth place: with 50 points! Places were determined by the number of correct guesses, the number of total clues eliminated per game, and the number of points found on the archives. Well done, everyone, thanks for helping us crack this case wide open! And a very special thanks to clevernotbrilliant for making those beautiful playing cards, and to toomanycurls for making the check-off sheets that were provided for each house to use.
  18. Blade Runner (both of them)

I just saw Blade Runner 2049 and I have thoughts... One of them being that the movie was very loud. Not the deepest of thoughts, I'll admit, but I dislike movies that are extremely loud. I like that neither movie had concrete endings and that there's a lot left for the viewer to piece together.
  19. My laptop has been in the shop but I'm getting it back tonight!

Turns this round will go in the following order: Hufflepuff Slytherin Gryffindor Ravenclaw Clues for each post are in the common rooms -- happy sleuthing!
  22. Cluedo! Round 2

Welcome to the second round of murderrrrrrrrrrrr and intrigue. We've shuffled around the suspects, locations, and weapons but poor Tasha is still the murder victim.
