  1. THIS SCAVENGER HUNT IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN THE PREVIOUS TWO, SO PAY ATTENTION. INCLUDING THE DETAILS AT THE BOTTOM IN THE SECOND SPOILER. Every paper needs a publisher. But how well do you know your publishers? That takes a hunt AND a matching game! Three (3) cards for thirteen (13) of your HPFT staff members have been embedded across the HPFT Archives and Forums in staff related content. To differentiate amongst the cards, there is a well-known attribute of each staff member's written in the top corner--not to be confused with the staff facts matching game. Search carefully for all the cards, keeping in mind that next week, you will be required to write three (3) Staff Profiles. More information regarding expectations for the writing portion of the staff profiles will be provided in a few days. Don't stop your search prematurely. There's a lot of ground to cover and sometimes the most unique - and potentially most valuable - discoveries are timeless treasures that stretch beyond mere staff facts. You'll find two (2) such precious pieces this week if you can find the right places to look--LadyL8's Interview Section challenge and PaulaTheProkaryote's Photography Section challenge. But wait! There's more. In addition to the card hunt, the thirteen (13) participating staff members have each submitted three (3) facts about themselves! Each fact you successfully match to the correct staff member will earn you points. In order to claim a staff member to write a profile about, you must find ALL three (3) of their cards as well as correctly match them to two (2) of their facts. However, because LadyL8 and PaulaTheProkaryote have chosen this week's wild cards, to claim either of them, you must find all three (3) of their cards and match them to all three (3) of their facts. Houses are not permitted to double up on staff profiles, so the competition will be fierce! (See second post in this thread to see which wild card is which.) Once you believe you are ready to claim a staff member, reply to this thread stating who you are claiming. A staff member will go to your common room and check that you have found all three cards and matched enough facts, and then will reply letting you know if your claim is successful or not. You have until the end of Week 3 (August 10th) to locate all the staff cards and match all the facts. The more of the search you complete and the more matches you make, the more your paper will be worth. But don't get scooped! When it comes to the press, those who finish fastest reap extra rewards. SPOILER 1: THE LIST SPOILER 2: IMPORTANT FACTS SUMMARIZED HERE - READ THEM OR ELSE AN ERUMPENT HORN MAY EXPLODE IN YOUR COMMON ROOM.
  2. HPFT Forums -- Week 1 assignments for the House Cup Finale have just been announced. They are as follows: Select an era Name your newspaper Begin graphic design for your newspaper Write 2-3 obituaries Start gathering prompts for Letters to the Editor Era Selection Houses are expected to select one of the following eras: Founders, First Wizarding War, Between Wars, or Second Wizarding War. Each newspaper will be centered around the chosen era. HPFT staff report that eras will be claimed on a first come, first served basis. Once an era is selected, no other house can use it, and switching is not permitted. Staff are looking forward to seeing how houses will strategize their era selection, either snatching their preferred era right away or waiting to see what prompts they like best. Reply to this thread by Friday, July 26 to claim an era. Graphic Design There are several graphic design elements to incorporate into the newspapers. They should be completed by the end of Week 3, except where noted otherwise. Advertisement: Signature/avatar set that advertises a house's newspaper. These should be completed and displayed by reporters by the end of Week 2. Newspaper Header: Must include the newspaper's name and should be designed around the era and newspaper itself, not the house creating it. Section Headers: Each section (obits, letters to the editor, and other yet-to-be-revealed sections) must each have a header GIFS: Articles/content in each section must be accompanies by GIFS Picspams: To accompany a yet-to-be-revealed section. Due by the end of Week 4. Obituaries Write at least two but no more than three obituaries about canon characters who died in the chosen era. Each obituary must be 500-750 words long and will be worth 100 points each. Staff will vote on their favorites and award bonuses to the top four favorites. Week 1 ends at 11:59 PM PDT (US) to maximize the length of time.
  3. HPFT Forums -- HPFT staff report that throughout this month-long newspaper assignment, there will be four wild cards up for grabs. The wild cards are associated with special extra sections of your newspapers. There will be four categories of extra sections. If a house has found the wild card associated with a section, they can claim that extra section. Only one house can claim each section--once it is claimed, it cannot be claimed by any other house. An extra section can be claimed at any point after its associated wild card is found, provided no other house has yet claimed it. Further details on the requirements of the extra sections are not yet available, but staff expect an announcement to be made in the coming weeks. The extra section associated with the wild card up for grabs in Scavenger Hunt #1 (the Letters to the Editor hunt) is "Critique Section." Please reply to this topic to claim extra sections. Wild Card #1 (Critique Section) - claimed by Slytherin Wild Card #2 (Divination Section) - claimed by Hufflepuff Wild Card #3 (Interview Section) - claimed by Ravenclaw Wild Card #4 (Photography Section) - claimed by Ravenclaw
  4. HPFT Forums - The meat of any good newspaper is, of course, the news articles it contains. Readers expect a newspaper to keep them abreast of the news of the day. Once again, you'll have to undertake a hunt to track down leads. Seven (7) leads from each of the four (4) eras have been embedded across the HPFT Archives and Forums. These are the leads the HPFT staff will expect you to chase down and report on when the time comes to publish your articles. Search carefully for the leads, keeping in mind that next week, you will be required to write three (3) Articles chosen from the leads you find this week for your era. Specific information regarding expectations for the writing portion of this important component of your paper will be provided soon. As before, there is one (1) special treasure hidden. Discovering this treasure will unlock the opportunity to publish an extra section in your newspaper - a Divination section. You have until the end of Week 2 (August 3rd, when this topic locks) to locate all the prompts - even those that do not apply to your specific era. The more of the search you complete, the more your paper will be worth. But don't get scooped! When it comes to the press, those who finish fastest reap extra rewards. Here is an example of what you're looking for: http://archive.hpfanfictalk.com/viewstory.php?sid=520&textsize=0&chapter=3 Details and plain English explanation beneath the spoiler tags. Read it - seriously. We'll be less generous answering questions covered below than last week, especially since you already have one of these hunts under your belts.
  5. Any paper worth its ink contains more than merely the news of the day. It also delivers readers powerful opinions on the issues of the day. As the architects of your paper, it will be up to you to separate the wheat from the chaff, selecting for publication only the most intriguing and timely issues. That takes a hunt. Five (5) prompts from each of the four (4) eras have been embedded across the HPFT Archives and Forums, representing the very issues on which the HPFT Staff will expect you to focus when the time comes to publish your Letters to the Editor. Search carefully for all the prompts, keeping in mind that next week, you will be required to write two (2) Letters to the Editor chosen from just two (2) of the prompts you will find this week. More information regarding expectations for the writing portion of this important component of your paper will be provided at the beginning of Week 2 (on July 27th or 28th). But don't stop your search prematurely. There's a lot of ground to cover and sometimes the most unique - and potentially most valuable - discoveries are timeless treasures that stretch beyond mere prompts. You'll find at least one (1) such precious piece this week if you can find the right place to look. You have until the end of Week 1 (July 27th) to locate all the prompts - even those that do not apply to your specific era. The more of the search you complete, the more your paper will be worth. But don't get scooped! When it comes to the press, those who finish fastest reap extra rewards. 6. To: All Columnists From: HPFT Staff We have reviewed the proposed prompts that you've identified and are happy to report that they meet with our initial approval. For those of you still on the hunt for any prompts, do carry on your search! Unfortunately, whatever your situation, your publishers have indicated that you will each be restricted to using two (2) of the prompts applicable to your particular paper. Each letter must be between 500-750 words long. As you know, these prompts focus on important issues of our time(s)! Sadly, given that it isn't covered in standard wizarding education, the general population is not terribly adept at persuasive writing. This means we'll be expecting you to ghost write your paper's perspective on the chosen issues as if you were a citizen rather than a columnist. We'll be selling these as that old newspaper staple - the Letter to the Editor. Take your position! Be authentic! Be convincing! For each Letter completed, your paper will receive points. It just so happens that we are also presently evaluating the quality of work being performed at each paper and will be reviewing each submission accordingly. Specifically, we'll be scrutinizing them for: Inclusion of Canon and/or Historical Information; Writing Mechanics; Persuasive Ability; and Overall Quality & Creativity The four (4) best Letters as judged by the above criteria will receive extra points. Make sure to make the most of this opportunity for yourselves and your papers! As always, you're on a deadline...ALL LETTERS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN END OF DAY 3 AUGUST 2018.
