    Preparing for NaNoWriMo

Preparing for NaNo *originally published in the October 2018 edition of Hear Ye, Hufflepuff* Happy October, 'Puffs! In no time at all, NaNoWriMo is going to be upon us! As always, we hope to have a strong showing of participating 'Puff NaNo-ers and Rebels! Although the official rules say you can't begin until November 1st, there's a lot you can do that isn't writing your story! So, in preparation for the craziness of NaNo, here are some tips on how to get ready: Set Your Goal Whether you decide to be a full NaNo-er, writing 50,000 words in 30 days, or you're going to be a Rebel with a different goal entirely, it's important to know from the start what you aim to achieve! Decide What You'll Write This may be a part of the first step if you're a Rebel, but for those starting new projects...you'll have to decide what those will be! Are you going to write an original fiction novel? A nonfiction treatise? A fanfic? Decide now! Organize Your Time If you're writing 50,000 words, that averages out to 1,667 a day. But maybe you're American and you know that you'll be spending Thanksgiving with family and won't be able to write that day. So, where will you make up the time? Approximate the days where you'll put your nose to the grindstone and be prepared for the days when you know you won't get much done. Knowing ahead of time where the stress might come can help alleviate it when it arrives. Prepare Your Survival Kit When the NaNo Crazies Café opens, there will be a whole topic for this, but in the days before November begins, stock up on the things you'll need to make your writing a comfortable and productive experience—snacks, tea, blankets, notebooks, tissues for when the tears come, whatever! Map Things Out Make a general outline of your story/chapters/etc. so that you'll be able to follow a plan. This doesn't work for everyone though, so adapt it to your own planning style! Make a list or a chart or gather all your scraps of paper where you've jotted rambling notes. Make a Backup Plan If something crazy happens on November 8th, what will you do instead of your original plan? Have a general backup for those "just in case" moments, so that you aren't completely crushed if things work out differently than you had planned. Relax Finally, breathe. October is the month of preparation, but it's not time to stress out yet! Instead, do what prep work you can, and otherwise, enjoy the month! November will be here before you know it. Good luck to you all!

    NaNoWriMo 2018

So it's that time of year. I have been attempting this every year since 2006 and have never won. This year I'm hoping to break that drought. I'm working on various things this year. I'm looking at finishing some HP WIPs and my original fic. Fingers crossed, people. Let's see what magic I can do this year.

So I'm Going to Lose NaNo...

Hello everyone! Happy end-of-November! I'm about to lose NaNoWriMo! . . . . And that is absolutely, 100%, this-isn't-sarcastic, okay! Really! I'm about to lose NaNo, and I'm completely fine with it! I have accomplished so much this month! I've written for this first time in years. I've begun a new novel, the sequel to Collateral, that I've been wanting to write for a long, long time. I've planned out the majority of that novel. I love the writing I've done. And I've written nearly 30,000 words! That's on top of all the things in my personal life: starting a second job, hosting a currently-apartment-less friend all month, having a different friend visit for four days, being on a doubled dosage of a pill that makes me super tired, Christmas shopping, family stress, and everything else. In other words, this month went wonderfully. I feel a tiny bit disappointed for not reaching 50,000—as I'm sure all of us who didn't do—but overall, I feel good. I had an amazing NaNo buddy in @bittersweetflames (hi, Carla!) who encouraged me through her own busy month. I had great advice along the way from @abhorsen. and so many others, rat-raced with some great people, and I feel great about what I've accomplished. So I guess this is a blog about the journey, not the destination. How did NaNo go for you? Did you meet your goals? (Congratulations!) Did you fall short, but still feel good? Did you fall short and feel disappointed? Any feelings, post them below and we can reflect! Thank you for reading!
  4. Ok, so - I have written 1,948 words. Yes, I am WAY behind It's OK, I will catch up. But, has anyone noticed that Christmas is coming up?? I LOVE CHRISTMAS!!! Yes, I have been Christmas shopping and not writing. To be fair though, I have 5 babies to shop for. Even though my eldest is 14 and into Anime and Pokemon, I'm still looking at HP stuff to buy. Which also reminds me. A friend's son is turning 11 this year, so he is getting a HP birthday. I'm going to crochet something small up for him and post it from "Mrs Weasley" The last few days I've spent moving my sites to a new hosting server that is more economical and that reminded me to update here. Here are a few lines from what I have written though

    Get ready. Get Set. And.........

So, I lied in 2007, I wrote New Beginnings (MA) and wrote 33,560 words. This is the most I have written, not the 28,297 from the year before. I figured this out as I updated the NaNoWriMo site of my previous attempts and word counts. I'm missing documents from 2009 - 2010 or I may not have labelled them as "nano" and can't remember what they were In any case, as I type this, there are 52 minutes to go till NaNo starts here in Sydney, Australia. I decided to continue writing my original piece. I've no real idea where to start - I just plan on writing. I added my word count widget to my profile picture, so this will show my progress. Good luck for those doing NaNoWriMo 2017

    NaNoWriMo 2017

The countdown to NaNoWriMo is on again. I participate EVERY year and I fail every year. I expect no different this year. Why do I do it? Because I've been working on my original fiction since 2009 and have yet to complete my first draft. It's a historical fiction based on a true timeline of events in Australia. As such, its also dealing with real towns and the longer I fail at writing, the more "life" goes on and towns change. But, I have spent over $2000 of my own money in research for this, so I can never give up - nor do I want to. Life has also played a massive part in the "no writing" aspect. I work full time and have just recently had baby #5. Motherhood kinda has to be a priority I came close to finishing NaNo once - my first year in 2006, with Draco and Ginny Pudding (MA), it sits at 28,297 words and I have yet to move all of it here to HPFT. The title was inspired by the HPFF Cliche Cafe, part of the NaNo fun on the forums of the time. It's the most I have written for NaNo - My least being 450 words last year Hopefully this year I will succeed, I just have no idea if I'll try and write my OF, start another, or write FF. Below in an excerpt from my original fiction - A first ever peek. I've never posted it publicly before. I have 3 more days to decide...I'll keep you updated.
