Hello and welcome to my Nest of Chaos. It's been a bit since I've attempted NaNo and I have zero time to do it, so I figured, why not go for it, right? :P

I'll be using NaNo to catch up on and revisit a bunch of different projects, the main ones being:

Through the Black [M] | Novel | HP

She may have been a Ravenclaw, but Julianne Savona was anything but the model student. Between Quidditch, failing Transfiguration, and dealing with unofficial family members, it seemed like everything was already as hard as it could get. But she could not have been more wrong...

-

Some of you may remember this project from way back when and I surprisingly got a burst of motivation for the first time in two years. Technically, I have 13 chapters of it written but it is going to undergo a massive overhaul of some outdated plot points that I'm not a big fan of anymore.

Designated Mum Friend [M] | Novella | HP

Mum Friend (n.)- the one friend in the group who is always taking care of and looking out for everyone else; the responsible one

Unfortunately for designated mum friend Lyra Stebbins, she is about to find out that always taking care of everyone else comes with its own set of problems.

-

I'm actually close to finishing this story thanks to some help from Julie. Six chapters are posted and if I've done everything right, it should only be about three chapters more.

Brown Eyed Girl [T-M] | Novella | The 100

Perri Laughlin had a weakness and her name was Raven Reyes.

A slow burn Raven/OC. I originally planned on keeping it only focused on the 2-3 months between seasons 2 and 3, but of course the plunnies don't want to leave me alone.

Helpless [M] | Novella | The 100

When a surprise death rocks the little town of Arkadia, Clarke Griffin seriously debates her decision to come home for the summer. All she had wanted was a quiet and uneventful break to take her mind off of her cheating ex and the events of the past summer. As it becomes clear she and her friends are being targeted by a vengeful killer, she's forced to confront her own past and all the skeletons that come with it.

-

A The 100 slasher!AU that is kinda sorta slightly based on I Know What You Did Last Summer and MTV's Scream series. I'll be honest, I have everything planned out for this one, but it's been a struggle writing a genre outside my comfort zone and trying to translate a slasher film onto the page, but hey, it's a fun project.

So yeah, those are the main things that I'll be trying to write. I'm sure there'll be some other things spread out through there. As always, any yelling at encouragement is appreciated and highly welcomed ^_^

Hello Claire!

I totally relate to doing NaNo despite my better judgement given lack of time. We can do it! (And also... we can forgive ourselves if we don't meet all of our goals ;) ) But ignore that. WE CAN DO IT! :bliss:

Questions!

  1. How do you plan to divide your work between the four stories?
  2. How do you plan to deal with old material from Through the Black? I am also redoing a fic I already attempted, so I genuinely need this advice, haha.
  3. If for some reason, you HAD to make each of your stories a crossover with another fandom, which would you pick and why? (I don't know anything about The 100, so I'm asking this for fun.)

Hi Claire! I'm here with some questions for you! ^_^

  • Following on from Renee's question above, do you think it'll make NaNo easier or harder to juggle a lot of stories?
  • And do you think switching between two very different fandoms multiple times in a month will be hard? Or is this something you already do?
  • Have you found it difficult to write Through the Black when there are a lot of Marauder and Sirius/OC stories? Have there ever been moments when you've felt that reading other stories in the same era/with the same ship has affected your head canon, whether positively or negatively?
  • You're writing Marauders and next gen fics at the same time. Have you noticed any parallels between James and James Sirius? Were those similarities intended and if so, how much of those were based off the epilogue?
  • How do you plan on translating the horror movie aspect onto the page for Helpless?
  • How do you write such good summaries?

We can TOTALLY do it! :excited:

1. How do you plan to divide your work between the four stories?

Basically I'm planning on working on whichever I have inspiration for that day haha. I think my problem with NaNo in years past is I get burnt out on my project and want to work on other things, so I'm hoping that by giving myself a bunch of options, I'll keep the motivation going.

2. How do you plan to deal with old material from Through the Black? I am also redoing a fic I already attempted, so I genuinely need this advice, haha.

To be honest, I'm kinda just reading through and changing the things that I'm not quite a fan of anymore lol. I went back and found the list of plot points I had originally planned (yeah, 17 year old me actually planned a story) and then wrote down which I wanted to keep and which I wanted to change/add. I don't really want to change too much around as I do really like the concepts I've got going, but obviously I've changed as a writer in the past three or so years that I've been working on it and little mechanical things definitely need to be updated.

3. If for some reason, you HAD to make each of your stories a crossover with another fandom, which would you pick and why? (I don't know anything about The 100, so I'm asking this for fun.)

Oooo, wow, I've never really thought about that haha. Hmmm, okay so I think that I'd crossover Through the Black with , DMF with , Brown Eyed Girl with , and Helpless with .

These were awesome questions, thank you so much!

Hi Claire! I'm here with some questions for you! ^_^

Hello! :waving:

1. Following on from Renee's question above, do you think it'll make NaNo easier or harder to juggle a lot of stories?

I'm hoping that giving myself the option to switch between different stories, I'll be able to keep my motivation going through the whole month. I'm not really too concerned with actually finishing any of them as long as I get something written throughout the month.

2. And do you think switching between two very different fandoms multiple times in a month will be hard? Or is this something you already do?

I want to say that it won't be too hard, but I think it definitely has it's challenges. I tend to write whatever I have motivation for at that moment so I'm a little used to it, but it's definitely going to be an adjustment going from Through the Black (romantic coming of age) to Helpless (full on horror) :P

3. Have you found it difficult to write Through the Black when there are a lot of Marauder and Sirius/OC stories? Have there ever been moments when you've felt that reading other stories in the same era/with the same ship has affected your head canon, whether positively or negatively?

It has most definitely influenced my headcanon greatly. One of my favorite fanfics is How to tame a Marauder by melian and I've read it so much that I have to remind myself what's actually canon and what's from her story. I don't think I'd necessarily say that all the influences are negative because I have such a firm view of my characters that it doesn't change that too much.

4. You're writing Marauders and next gen fics at the same time. Have you noticed any parallels between James and James Sirius? Were those similarities intended and if so, how much of those were based off the epilogue?

So my first reaction when I read this was "no, of course the two characters are completely different" but then I actually started thinking about it and...yeah, they're incredibly similar haha. They both like a good prank and are genuinely good people who deeply care about their friends, but I think James is much more of a stereotypical Gryffindor than James Sirius. He's a bit more willing to be the center of attention and jump in head first than James Sirius, but other than that, yeah, they're pretty similar. I don't think I quite meant to do that, but I think it was more a subconscious "this is what I find attractive in a guy" as opposed to the epilogue (which I basically just use as a reference for names :P)

5. How do you plan on translating the horror movie aspect onto the page for Helpless?

That is a very good question :P So obviously it's going to be a lot harder to build the tension on the page than the sceen because I can't have those scenes where you see the killer in a window and then they're not there when the camera turns back and all those similar scenes. The plan (hopefully) is to be able to build the tension in the opposite way by never knowing if the killer is going to be revealed on the next page and keeping Clarke (the pov character) as unaware and on edge as I can without making it too over the top (piece of cake, right? :P)

6. How do you write such good summaries?

Aw, thank you! Honestly, I think it came from the days of ff.net when everyone would say "summary sucks, story is better!" and I wanted mine to actually be good out of spite haha. I also had one of my creative writing professors teach us how to write a good synopsis in class so that definitely helped.

Thank you for the awesome questions, they were so much fun to answer!!

NaNo doesn't even start for another 10 hours and I'm already adding stories

Friday Night Flights [M] | Novel | HP (ish)

In small town USA where no one bothers to keep magic a secret, Friday night Quidditch reigns supreme. For the Fort Mill Eagles, finally having a winning season means having to balance school, practice, and personal lives while keeping secrets no one wants to come out.

It's more than just a game.

-

This right here is absolute proof that my inspiration comes directly from whatever media I am mindlessly consuming at the moment. If you couldn't tell by the title, this story came about as I was watching Friday Night Lights (aka one of the most underrated shows in history). This was also right about the time that JK Rowling was coming out with all of the stuff about wizarding in America and my muse just kinda went "yeah, okay, no" and thus public wizarding school in America was born.

I plan on having this story cover a lot of heavy topics like homophobia, abuse, bullying, discrimination in general, etc. It's based really heavily on my own high school and the town that I've lived in my whole life which is very much Small Town USA. Because of that, it's definitely been hard to actually get the words on the page because it feels like I'm just writing about my own everyday life. I have a million and one plans and hopes for this story so hopefully one day I get it all down on paper.

Just popping in here to selfishly say YAAAAS because I loved the first chapter of Friday Night Flights and I'm so excited you're going to be working on it for NaNo! <3

A few questions for you:

  • What made you choose the projects you're working on for NaNo?
  • Do you think any one story is going to draw your attention more than others?
  • Is there any sort of schedule you're thinking of sticking to in terms of stories, or are you just going to see what your muse/inspiration sticks to?
  • Will you be posting as you go?

Good luck with NaNo and all of your various activities this month!! You can do it <33

1) What made you choose the projects you're working on for NaNo?

I picked the ones that I most wanted to write about and from there I narrowed it down to ones that I figured I'd actually be motivated to do something with. I'm sure that other projects will work their way in, but I hopefully I'm able to stick with just these four five.

2) Do you think any one story is going to draw your attention more than others?

I honestly don't know. My first reaction is to say the HP stories will take over The 100 ones, but Halloween's got me in a spooky mood so Helpless might stick its head out more than the others.

3) Is there any sort of schedule you're thinking of sticking to in terms of stories, or are you just going to see what your muse/inspiration sticks to?

Jill, when have you ever known me to actually make a plan and stick with it :P

4) Will you be posting as you go?

Yes, I plan to! Helpless might only be on AO3 until I make sure that I actually want to go the distance with it since I have so many WIPs on HPFT already lol

Thank you so much for the questions, lovely! Good luck to you too! :bestwishes:

Hello Claire!

I am absolutely amazed at how many projects you intend working on! They all look wonderful! Love the summaries, that's one of the things I struggle with the most.

1. Do you have nay tips for good summaries you would like to share?

2. I see that you have stories from two fandoms. How do you feel when you switch between the two?

3. What is your planning process for stories? Do you plan way ahead or write as you go or mix it up?

4. Which one of your OCs you love writing and why?

5. Which one of your OCs give you a hard time and why?

Just adding to the nest with some questions to get to know you better! Good luck with the NaNo!

Howdy Claire!

I love the idea for Friday Night Flights! I've always loved FNL and this sounds like the PERFECT American AU.

1. What made you decide to have the Fort Mill Eagles be upstarts (?) instead of champions like the Panthers?

2. If you had to give the following players Quidditch positions, which would you pick?

  • Saracen
  • Riggins
  • Smash
  • Vince
  • Luke
  • Voodoo

3. Will this story feature a Buddy Garrity figure?

4. I happen to agree with you about public wizarding school in the USA, but what drives your vision for it?

5. Do you imagine the fever over Quidditch in the Fort Mill area actually took any inspiration from American football mania?

Good luck writing! I can't wait to read it!

Hi Claire! Your projects sound really interesting! I’m so excited for Friday Night Lights and for Through the Black, especially.

1. What’s the rival school in Friday Night Lights like?

2. How would you describe the demographic of the school? Mostly preppy kids, or because it’s a public school, more diverse?

3. What is Juliana’s family like?

4. What sparked your regained interest in Through the Black?

Ah, so many awesome questions!!

15 hours ago, FlamingQuilltips said:

You and me both :P

1. Do you have nay tips for good summaries you would like to share?

Hmm, I guess I'd say... pretend that you've just gotten on an elevator and right as the doors close, some real big publisher gets on. You have only the elevator ride to get them interested in your story, so what do you say? Thinking of an elevator pitch helps me narrow down what's important and interesting enough to put in the summary.

2. I see that you have stories from two fandoms. How do you feel when you switch between the two?

It's definitely a bit of an adjustment since they're so different from each other, but that also makes it much easier to separate the two in my mind. Going from The 100 back to Harry Potter feels a lot like pushing myself out of my comfort zone and then getting to come right back home when I'm done.

3. What is your planning process for stories? Do you plan way ahead or write as you go or mix it up?

My process is kinda, I get inspiration for a vague plot, spend hours planning a detailed backstory for everything and then just winging the actual plot lol.

4. Which one of your OCs you love writing and why?

All of them! :P

I do actually love all my OCs, but right now I'm enjoying writing about Perri from The 100. I've had her story in my head since I first watched the show and it's been fun exploring all of that on paper.

5. Which one of your OCs give you a hard time and why?

Hmmm, I think I'd have to say the cast of FNF at the moment. Parts of each of them are taken from people I grew up with and since they're in a setting that's so close to my real life, it's hard to always get them on the page.

Hey, Kevin! Thanks for stopping by!

1. What made you decide to have the Fort Mill Eagles be upstarts (?) instead of champions like the Panthers?

I mostly needed a reason for one of the characters to have transferred to be on a better team and it gave the perfect excuse for a new coach to come in. The Eagles are definitely closer to East Dillion than West Dillion.

2. If you had to give the following players Quidditch positions, which would you pick?

  • Saracen- I think I'd have to go with Keeper
  • Riggins- Beater and a slightly terrifying one at that too
  • Smash- Chaser all the way, he'd be the go to for getting the Quaffle down the field
  • Vince- I'm really really torn between Chaser and Seeker, I keep going back and forth on it
  • Luke- He'd be that player that was always put in Keeper but is also a damn good Chaser when they need one
  • Voodoo- Seeker, all the attention would be on him

3. Will this story feature a Buddy Garrity figure?

At the moment I hadn't planned on it, but now that I think about it, it could be interesting to throw one in down the line.

4. I happen to agree with you about public wizarding school in the USA, but what drives your vision for it?

It's mostly based on my own experiences having grown up in the US. I live in a relatively small town and there were still four high schools, five or so middle schools, and too many elementary schools to count. I just found it crazy that there'd only be one wizarding school for the whole country and figured a public school system would make a lot more sense. The school's in FNF are all based on the actual high schools in my county with very similar curriculums and everything.

5. Do you imagine the fever over Quidditch in the Fort Mill area actually took any inspiration from American football mania?

I think it definitely took after the way sports are held up on a pedestal. As an East Coaster, this particular story is probably more focused on lacrosse than football (because I'm definitely going to stick some No-Maj sports in here too), but I imagine somewhere like Texas treats their Quidditch players like gods.

Hi Claire!

Hey, Shreya!

1. What’s the rival school in Friday Night Lights like?

To be honest, I haven't really planned out the other schools that much. I don't really see them as having one main rival since they're not really that great of a team at the beginning. I'd say their biggest competition is an all girls private school called Takons Academy. They win their region every year and that's where Thea's friend Nicola transferred so she could be on a better team.

2. How would you describe the demographic of the school? Mostly preppy kids, or because it’s a public school, more diverse?

Since it's based on my own school, it's definitely 95% white kids. There's some preppy kids, some rich snobs, some burnouts, a lot of rednecks, and hardly any POC.

3. What is Julianne’s family like?

This is actually going to be a big plot point later in the story, so there's a lot of backstory there :P Her dad is from an old Italian pureblood family who moved to the UK when he was a kid. He's on the Wizengamot (is that even how you'd say it) and tends to be a workaholic, especially by the time shown in the story. He also is aggressively against  Her mom used to be a Healer (and a really good one too), but stopped when she had Julianne. She is also from one of the Sacred 28 pureblood families (Fawley was her maiden name). Because of a spoiler that I don't want to say because I've been hiding it for literal years at this point, she stays at home most of the time and it also causes some tension between her and her husband. Julianne is an only child and tends to spend an increasing amount of time over at her next door neighbor's, who just so happen to be the Potters.

4. What sparked your regained interest in Through the Black?

I honestly couldn't tell you lol. The other day motivation just popped up and I edited a chapter and a half in a few hours. I'm hoping NaNo will help me carry that along.

Thank you guys for the amazing questions and good luck to you all!!

Almost two weeks in and I have written almost 9.5k words which includes two (yes two!) completed chapter of Friday Night Flights and one and a half chapters of Brown Eyed Girl! Special shoutout to the best pen pal ever @dreamgazer220 for her assistance in everything from major plot planning to helping pick out Perri's faceclaim

Read on for a snippet of the newest chapter of Brown Eyed Girl ^_^

Perri.jpg.e4bdaff7d7e3fae702053e19ba6f7865.jpg

three -or- eric jackson, master of subtlety

Spoiler

If Perri had thought that Jackson would have dropped the whole “Perri-has-a-crush-on-Raven” thing, she was sorely mistaken. It was nearly constant for the next few days with little jabs and comments worked into their conversations. No one else seemed to notice, but by day four, she was about ready to punch him in the face.

“Well, look who decided to show up,” Jackson said as Perri walked into the med bay.

She raised her eyebrow as she walked over to him, grabbing some of the supplies off the cart next to him. “Yeah,” she said, walking farther down to the right shelves. “I do still work here. Unless there’s something you’ve forgotten to tell me.”

“No, I know,” he said casually and Perri glanced over at him. “I mean, unless someone told Abby that you snuck a certain someone in here and used the supplies without her knowing—”

Perri almost dropped everything she was holding as she whirled around to face Jackson. “You didn’t.”

“Of course not,” Jackson scoffed. “Come on, you know me better than that.” He paused, a grin on his face as he put the last of their needles into a drawer. Perri rolled her eyes and turned back to focus on her own task. “Now, telling her that you spend all your time with Raven instead of working…”

“Jackson!” Perri snapped, whipping back around to glare at him.

“Kidding, kidding!” he said, the grin still on his face. “You should really learn to lighten up.”

“Eric Jackson, I swear to god,” Perri growled, throwing a roll of gauze at him as he laughed. She felt her cheeks start to flush and quickly shifted her head so her face fell into her face. “You are dead to me.”

Jackson put his hand over his heart like he had been wounded. “That’s cold, Laughlin,” he said as the door creaked open. “That’s really cold.” Perri stuck her tongue out at him before turning to see who had come in.

So, I don't have questions, I just came here to say how proud I am of you for everything you've accomplished so far! You've written a TON and have made some pretty awesome picspams. Plus, it's only the beginning of week 2--plenty of time left <33

Also, I love that snippet and I'm so happy to see more Jackson and that he has a first name!

Way to go, Claire :cheering:
