This was really good, and I like that you drew connections between her dragon children and the one she lost - it's only natural that she finds a way to connect both of those events considering she thinks of the dragons as her children as well. It makes sense that at this time she'd be thinking about the death of her other child, as well. And who better to tell than Jon, as they've been getting so much closer by this point?
The end was wonderful in a way I didn't expect - it's not happy, but it seems she's come to terms with Viserion's death. Like she's promised to herself to make his death not in vain. Of course losing Rhaego was very difficult, but the point she makes is that after some time since then, she was able to see how a horrible thing made way for good things to happen. It sort of makes Viserions death easier to bear - while she's obviously still heartbroken about it, she is motivated to find a way for his death to mean something, and that she can make something good out of this horrible thing. I really liked that. Very well written!
Thank you! I have a lot more feelings about this post-season 8 so it's nice to look back on simpler times lol.
Okay, from the start:
"My queen" = yessss. Yes, yes, 1000 times yes. (I know that they are related, but I do not care, I ship them so much.)
Okay, onto more important things.
I really, really love your take on Dany's losses and what they led to. There's a lot of nuance in what she's saying; she stops short of saying that it was for the best, because of course she can't say that (and especially not right now, when she's just lost Viserion), but the implication is there, IMO - both with Rhaego, and here.
Amazing job! <3
So, it took so long that maybe you wouldn't gush about the "my queen" now lol. After all, that was one of his only lines last season! Despite that, I still have a soft spot for this story and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
This was soooo good! I watched this episode last night and I was totally heartbroken. I love being able to read this, and read a little more into Dany's feelings. She's lost two children in the most horrific ways possible. I love the connection between the Targaryen words and how Viserion died, and I love how she can talk to Jon about it. Great job, Bec! <3
Thank you! It has taken me FOREVER to get to this and I am so sorry. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
I definitely needed this after last night's episode. I was so heartbroken when Viserion died. Like of all the characters, I thought the dragons were safe at least!
I love getting to see Dany grieving for both of her lost children. They really have glossed over most of her past. It makes sense in the show for her to not talk about her losses because she needs to appear strong, so it's really nice to see her reflecting on them and the fact that they are what pushed her to become the ruler she is.
I think the tone of this is really spot on, which is super impressive. It definitely feels like this could be part of the script, and I think that's really hard to do. The language was just old-fashioned enough to sound appropriate without being hard to read.
I loved it!
Ugh, what is it about animals in film (and books... and real life...) that makes their deaths so much harder to deal with than regular characters? I'm glad you liked the story and thank you so much for the comments about the balance of old fashioned and new Your Jily novel does an awesome job at that and has been one of my faves for years, so it means a lot. <3
