Hi Beth! I'm here to leave a review for Quodpot (Match 1) and BvB!
Oh my god, Beth, this story has left me feeling so fuzzy inside. Amelia and Minerva are honestly the cutest thing ever! I love how you've characterized both Minerva and Amelia—they're clearly ambitious girls, wanting to further their pursuit of knowledge, but they don't want to push anyone down for that. They've both just got natural curiosity, which, as a Ravenclaw, I can appreciate! And I also liked that you've really highlighted their insecurities too. Minerva's characterization made me think a bit of Hermione in her first year before she properly befriended Ron and Hermione, which makes me sympathize so much with her. And Amelia feeling that she's "mundane" (which is LUDICROUS by the way) makes me sympathize with her too; I think that girls who are a bit bookish are often times misnoted as dull, when in fact we're just bursting with curiosity. And Amelia's so quirky—I love her little catch-phrase. She's delightful.
I live for their dynamic too. I love that they bonded over their natural curiosity; I think that curiosity is sometimes misrepresented as a self-serving and isolating trait and I loved that you showed its powers to forge connections between people. And I loved them coming up with names for each other—perceptive names too, that really highlighted all their positive aspects; Amelia-orate and Minnified really uplift one another, which is a key component. Now I ship them super hard and would die for a drabble of them sitting in the library and playing with spells together, conjuring flowers for each other. Ugh.
This was so cute, I'm so happy now. Thank you for sharing, Beth! <3
Hey, I’m here for BvB!
I really enjoyed this. I think it can be really difficult to write kids - I definitely shy away from it for that reason! - but your portrayal of second-year Minerva was perfect. The kids were so realistically obnoxious - twelve year olds are so easily amused by the stupidest things sometimes, and they can be so insecure that they can’t laugh off nonsense like “Minervous” for the ridiculousness that it is. I can completely see why Minerva felt uncomfortable and excluded, and I can also see how her tendency to talk more to professors because she was more comfortable with them probably turned into a little bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I also loved how Amelia approached Minerva - I think she needed that friend and to feel like she wasn’t alone, and I can see how Amelia could be that for her. I’m curious to see where you take their friendship - Amelia’s clearly been paying close attention to Minerva and is a lot more outgoing, but Minerva is already clearly feeling a little off-kilter from their conversation. I’m not sure yet whether it’s the shock of having a friend at all or something about Amelia herself - I’ll be interested to see who develops and articulates their feelings first!
This was an amazing job, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
