This is beyond cute. You just know little Fred got his brains from his dad, only he's applying them in the complete opposite way, which is just delightfully hilarious! The line about Fred in danger of becoming a Prefect had me cackling. So good, like always!

oh my god how have i not read this drabble before because melanie this is the amazingest drabble ever and your portrayal and headcanon for freddie weasley had me cracking up and die a little.

i just,,the idea of freddie being studious and the most risk-averse gryffindor ever (since uncle percy) and it’s a form of rebellion against his father, but at the same time it’s really not because freddie likes is and he likes studying and oh god he’ll be self-studying for more owls than he’s even in class for, it’s all so bloody brilliant i am now laughing out loud at the idea and just imagining george’s face (mix of genuine surprise but also proud but also fully there to just tease freddie because george is a good dad)

i love that line that george says, how this all might lead to becoming a prefect and i can just see the absolute horror masking pride behind it and it’s just great.

if you couldn’t tell, i really enjoyed this drabble and now i really really want you to resurrect the morning waffle if that means more of this version of freddie weasley because you wrote him amazingly, he’s perfect and a good kid and i love him okay

Hello! Here for a galazy review!

Firstly, I have to say I love the play on words in the story title! And I also love that Fred is not a clone of his father but seemingly the complete opposite. Studying in July? Fred the first would be turning in his grave. And self-studying for OWLs with eyes on perhaps sitting the exams. Good grief. How will George bear it? I can just imagine the discussion between them, Fred trying to put forward an argument to take as many OWLs as possible, and George putting his foot down. It's usually the case that the kid wants to take 'David Beckham studies' and 'Interpretive dance' with absolutely no intention of going into performing arts after school, and the parent is desperately begging them to reconsider and take Biology and Geography instead.

That's so smart of Fred to point out that his parents never said a thing about his spare time reading, and George's little jibe about becoming a prefect made me smile. But the best line is:

"I do like to live dangerously"

Which tells me everything I need to know about Fred having inherited George's rather marvellous sense of humour.

This was super adorable and said so much in such a tiny story <3

Hi there!

What an interesting take on next gen Fred. Normally in fics I see him as just like his dad, very mischievous and a bit of a prankster so this was a nice change. Very risk-averse but still a Gryffindor, I love it.

I love his determination as well, he still seems like a little bit of a trickster with the way he found a way through the rules to still get more O.W.L.S, because they hadn't said he couldn't read in his spare time. It's quite amusing, I can see why Fred would find it amusing as well. He probably didn't expect his son to be like this, it's great! I kind of hope he does get prefect.

A really great piece!

Hi Melanie!

I was so excited to get to read more of your comedy after the Landon and Peters story. You're so good at it. :D

This story honestly left me grinning like an idiot. I love the idea of George having a son who's not a prankster, but a complete nerd who just wants to learn and read. Percy must be so proud!

I have such a soft spot for nerdy characters, having grown up as a total nerd myself. I think my parents were pretty baffled that I completely missed a phase of teenage rebellion. My oldest sister sort of had one. My second sister really didn't. I completely didn't. And then my little sister went absolutely wild to make up for it. My poor parents. xD

Your ability to write things that are subtly funny, but still laugh-out-loud is amazing. I love that you can make me laugh--it's pretty rare that stories do, to be honest!

This was fantastic. Great job!!

Best,
Emily

This reminds me of what (some adult) said when teenagers started wearing their pants down so their underwear hung out. “If we just got every guy over the age of thirty to do that for a week, it would go out of fashion.”  You’ve taken a concept/definition, which we admittedly tend to look at unidirectionally, and completely flipped it giving the classic “rebellion” an entirely new perspective. Self-studying Arithmancy? I’m not even sure Dumbledore was that scholarly. George has maintained his great sense of humor through everything (“if left unchecked, it might lead to George’s worst nightmare-being a prefect--oh horrors.) I do feel a bit for George since he can’t understand where his son is coming from but I’m sure he’ll support him. He can always send him to Hermione for a mentor.

Hi!

This is short, but I really love it. I don't think you could have told this story in any fewer words. The esperssiveness of the dialog added so much context. I can easily imagine the looks on their faces, and those looks say more about the characters than another 500 words of back story and narrative ever could. Fred has taken the spirit of his namesake and aimed it in a different direction. He applies his curious, humorous, irreverant nature to excelling at his studies. If McGonagall is still teaching, she probably finds Fred just a frustrating as his father, but frustrating in terms of her inability to keep him challenged. Poor dear.

Nice job! Very enjoyable!

Author's Response:

Hey Dan, thanks for taking a moment to drop a review! I love the idea that Fred is frustrating to his teachers because he needs more of a challenge, I think I agree with you there. And my Fred II definitely does have a sense of humor, he just channels that and his energy in a different way than his dad and namesake did.

Anyway, this was super solid of you -- drabbles don't get a lot of love and I just spit this out for House Cup points. So thank you!! :)
