About this blog

Hello!

This blog is for general random musings, related and unrelated to fic :) The title comes from the W.B. Yeats poem that also inspired my username, "Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven."

anti-police brutality fundraiser

Dearest HPFT community, As you might be aware, police brutality is a huge issue in the United States. Recently, there have been a series of killings where white police officers have killed Black people--including one recent incident where a white police officer in Minneapolis pinned George Floyd, a Black man, down in broad daylight and knelt on his neck for eight minutes, even while he pleaded for his life. All of these incidents (which are part of a much longer history of state-sanctioned

stories written by computers

Hello   I’ve been researching machine creativity and I ran into a few interesting articles that I wanted to share with everyone! If you don’t know, machine creativity is exactly what it sounds like it is: teaching computers how to create art in any form. It’s a very complicated field, because if you think about it, all computers are are mega-powerful calculators with lots of memory. How in the world could they write stories and poems and draw pictures?  The answer is through math!

iterated algorithms: over and over and over

Recently, my mind has been in a bit of a disarray.  A large part of it is because I'm at this precipice in my life where lots of changes are happening very quickly. My family and I just moved into a new house after living in the same apartment for ten years. I'm going to head off to college in the fall, 500 miles away from my twin sister, and I've never been apart from her for more than a couple days. My brother's moving in July for his new job. And there's just the general instability that

light, refracted

I hate taking selfies. Actually, I hate having my picture taken in general. Scrolling through my phone, I can count on one hand the number of pictures that I have of myself--even fewer that were actually taken this year. On the other hand, my phone is full of pictures of my friends. I love taking pictures of them--they shine so brightly and I just want to preserve that ephemeral brightness, or even just a glimmer of it. I think, recently, I've realized that the reason why I hate taking

imagining a world where poc can thrive

Hi everyone, I’ve been thinking of writing something like this for a long time, and right now feels like a perfect time. I wanted to start a conversation about how we can all collectively be anti-racists even in our writing and wanted to offer my own reflections. first, a few caveats! There’s a reason that I’m posting this in my blog and not in the Resources section or somewhere else on the forums; I do not want this to be interpreted as Expert Advice or anything. It’s just litera

four seasons, four loves

The title is a reference to Avatar: The Last Airbender   One of the things and astonished seven-year-old me the most when I moved to Massachusetts to California was the fact that Massachusetts actually has four seasons. In California, it's more like you've got 2 seasons: one incredibly hot, wildfire-igniting, bone-melting summer, and the rest of the year being a little wetter and little less hot. Oh, and if you live in San Francisco, there's always fog, so you might not even notice the diff

what's your mythology?

This is a phrase that one of the English teachers at my school uses often, and I think it's such a profound phrase. What's my mythology? What are the stories that make up me--the stories that make up my dreams, my fears, my hopes? What are the stories that capture my humanness?  Whenever I sit down to write anything, I always try to consider this question. What are my characters' mythologies? How can I write them? Mythologies are not just "headcanons" I have about these characters; they're

intersectional feminism

Hi everyone! As you may know, March is Women's History Month, focused around celebrating the achievements of women through history and in the present. This month, I've been reflecting a lot on intersectional feminism, which is a brand of feminism that embraces intersectionality, a term coined by Kimberle Crenshaw, or the understanding that people experience multiple forms of inequality (and privilege) at the same time. Intersectional feminism aims to center the voices of those that experien

the big five: hpft version

hello folks! if you recall, last week i ran a brief poll asking hpfters to take the big five test.  now, as promised, i'm here to report some of the stats, and believe me, they are very interesting!  first, a bit on methodology for the stats nerds i anonymized info, only collecting information about the person's house, so there shouldn't be too much identifying information. then i calculated averages for each house for each trait as well as the hpft-wide average. nothin
