If there was only one forum that you could post in on HPFT, which one would it be?
this is such a tough question :hmm: i think probably writer's journals because i like to bother people ask questions about people's writing and steal their secrets get an insight into their writing process :P i also like to post in my own WJ with fic ideas because i have a feeling they would be lost to the void otherwise.

What [forum-appropriate] meme or GIF do you think best describes your role on the site?
to no one's surprise, i'm really torn between these two:

giphy.gif and source.gif
as to how they describe my role... i shall let the people decide that :ninjavanish:

What is your favourite non-HP fandom?
red rising! it's a series by pierce brown (two trilogies - the first one is finished and the second trilogy happens ten years after the first one ends and the second book just came out (i'm ofc reading it right now)) about darrow of lykos, a slave on mars who starts a rebellion (this is such a bad summary and so much more happens). it's so well written, all the characters are morally grey, the hero is not a hero a lot of the time - basically it has everything i absolutely love. and it's dark. it's been my obsession since the first book came out and i made a ton of graphics for it but no fics.....yet. though it's such an intricate and complicated world that i'm not sure if i'd ever be able to write anything in it that's not like...a smutty drabble or something equally unrelated to the actual world haha :P

What is one of your plunnies that you really want to write but haven’t found the time/inspiration for yet?

the adventures of ziggy the cat and odin the owl!
:ninjavanish: this is more of an inspiration than time issue because i have zero plot for it except a very vague idea, but also i have so many potential stories and ongoing stories/series that need to be updated that just i never managed to sit down and actually think of some plot for it. but just from the title and from the characters i've created in TAOBN i think it would be hilarious and very fun to write.

What is your favourite thing to do on HPFT?

reading fics :P is that a cheat-y response? i also really enjoyed participating in planning the finale and running it - it was a lot of fun so lately that's been my favourite thing.

What’s your favourite trope and why?

friends to lovers because for me all the best relationships start off as friendships. i admit it might not be true for every relationship ever, but it's been my experience so i like it. i also enjoy a good sociopathic hero trope  (not sure what that says about me).

If you could only write in one genre for the rest of eternity, which one would you choose?

this is easy because i already write only angst (mixed with romance and drama but still). i think i'm physically incapable of writing a story with no angst in it. mostly because RL is always angsty, or almost always (for me? is it universal? i don't know).

Lex Talionis (M): This follow-up to No Mercy (M) is just as dark as you would expect, but it also illustrates the lengths Kris's characters go to to have their debts and revenge settled. It's a brief snapshot, but the emotions and actions conveyed are strong and convicting. If you're familiar with The Art of Being Nonchalant (Or Not) (M), this addition to the universe comes highly recommended!

We kicked off August with two awesome-sauce Head Students: @juls and @nott theodore!

N O T T   T H E O D O R E

What is your favorite place to visit on HPFT?

It has to be Gryffindor Tower! The den is a very cosy place to spend some time ^_^ but I love stopping by the Writers' Journals as well.  People write such thoughtful, detailed answers about their writing and the universes that they're building and it's always so fun and fascinating to read.

If there’s one story of yours you would like to tell us about, what would it be and why?

I'll go for one of my more recent stories, because I've not actually written that much lately.  I'd probably say Paper Faces - it's a one-shot inspired by the song Masquerade from The Phantom of the Opera, and it follows Daphne Greengrass in her final year of Hogwarts, trying to deal with the conflicting pressures of the war, her parents' expectations for her, and her own conscience.  I hadn't thought much about her character beforehand, but she really came to life in my mind while I was writing this story and I think that translates into the story.

 What is your writing kryptonite?

Romance?  And concision (it's a real effort not to elaborate on that one :P )

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning to write?

It really depends on the story!  I generally check the profiles for canon characters to make sure I'm not getting details (especially timelines) wrong there, and otherwise it varies according to the genre and length of the story I'm writing.  I'm really impatient, though, so I tend to jump into the writing before researching everything, and then end up looking up minute, random details while I'm writing the story.  That's probably why it takes me so long to finish anything - I'm easily distracted :P

In your opinion, what are some ethics for writing historical figures?

Hmm, that's a tricky question.  I think that has to depend on how recently the person lived, what's known about them, and what type of person they were.  When I do write historical figures (like in my story Witch), I try and make sure the portrayal is nuanced (and probably slightly sympathetic) rather than one-dimensional.

What do you think is most important: writing what’s popular (and in-demand from readers) or writing what the author has an interest in (even if it isn’t a popular niche)?

Writing what the author is interested in, no question.  I can't write a story that I don't care about, and the words always flow much easier when it's a story that you want to write, rather than one you think you should write because it'll be more popular and get more reads/reviews.  But then again, I tend to avoid the most popular characters/pairings like the plague :P

J U L S

Thanks for the honor of being a Head Student during the month of August :mcgonagall:

What is your favorite place to visit on HPFT?

My favorite place on HPFT is the Slytherin Common Room. I've found kindred spirits and friends there. (Plus - we all like cats 🐱)

If there’s one story of yours you would like to tell us about, what would it be and why?

All my stories are my babies. I'm sure everyone can relate to that. Whether they're terrible, outdated or just terribly cliche, they still have a part of you in them. I can't say I really have just one favorite story - it's so hard to choose :ninjavanish:. But for the ones I have posted here on HPFT it's got to be What if? It's about Snape and if he'd lived past the Battle of Hogwarts. Why? It's about Snape!

For you, what’s the most difficult part of writing?

Getting started. That first sentence or paragraph really gets the story going for me. I must have tons of First sentence/paragraph docs to choke on. But, once that beginning is begun - it's fabulous.

What age group [children, teens, younger adults, older adults, etc.] do you enjoy writing about the most?

I'd have to say younger to older adults. You can do more with them and to them.

Is there any genres/tropes/themes that you didn’t like to read/write at first, but eventually grew into?

I'm really not into violence, but as time went by, it became easier to write. For the most part at least.

In your opinion, what are three (3) important things to keep in mind while writing?

Concentration, consistency,  and having fun with what you're writing.

@sibilant's reorienting took Story of the Month for August! We have a review column prepared as well as an Interview With the Author!

R E V I E W   C O L U M N

If you're searching for a story that tugs the heartstrings of familial bonds and relationships, specifically involving a special, transcendent relationship between sisters, then we highly recommend checking out @sibilant's reorienting.

On the very surface of the story, without giving away its true essence, the story is about Padma Patil returning to her (past) home during a post-war era, putting emphasis through a metaphor on just how difficult it was to readjust, and how she felt out of place. She's met unexpectedly by her sister, Parvati, and the pair have differences they need to work out. When you dive deeper than the surface, and with Shreya's beautiful writing, the reader is left with a gorgeous message of healing, bonding, and just what a sisterly relationship can mean.

The characters, themselves, are heavily emotionally led, which is extremely fitting for the story as the situation itself calls for emotional response. Not only is it natural, but it drives the sentiment of the sentiment of the story home with more force and precision. What's more is that there's a certain balance of stubbornness and yielding during Padma and Parvati's interaction that is exceptionally telling of a caring sibling relationship just beneath the surface.

And so, the idea of reorienting, as the story is so aptly named, goes much farther than just adjusting to a place that once felt like home. In fact, it lends to the idea that it's not the location that makes a place home, but the people therein.

The author has done a beautiful job with the story -- of taking a concept and twisting it around to a much deeper level, of showing the readers a solid glimpse of who Padma and Parvati are, of showcasing her show-stopping writing skills, and of reaching reader's emotions. If you haven't had a chance to swing by, we hope you do soon; you're certainly missing out, otherwise.

What inspires you to write?

...would it be too Ravenclaw to say everything? :ninjavanish: I don't have one single source of inspiration. Music, other literature, TV/film, etc are definitely common sources of inspiration--but I also draw inspiration from podcasts, from conversations, and more organically, from the world around me. Basically, if there is an inkling of a story, of something deeper waiting to be explored, chances are I will be inspired to tell that story haha :D That's why I have a herd of plunnies at all times 🤦‍♀️

What is a genre/trope you've never written before, but want to try?

Mystery! I love reading mystery stories (it's definitely the Ravenclaw in me haha). The idea of writing a mystery seems incredibly daunting, with the amount of work that needs to go into planning it, but also I'm an extremely detailed-oriented person, so it may be right up my alley :P

Who are some published authors you look up to?

Oh gosh, so many! I love Maxine Hong Kingston for her magical-realism style and her fascinating subversion of the lines between fact and fiction. I love Donna Tartt for her compelling characters and her beautiful prose. Leigh Bardugo, Holly Black, and Erin Morgenstern have written some of my favorite books every with super multi-dimensional and real characters! Oh, and I'll always look up to Jane Austen :D

...I didn't intend for all of them to be women haha, oops :P

If you could give one piece of advice to fellow writers, what would it be?

Well, I'm definitely not qualified to be giving anyone advice on anything, but I think I've grown a lot as a writer from careful analysis of others' writing. Whenever I read someone else's work--whether it's a published novel or a fic--I try to be very attentive of how it was constructed and to understand what the writer did well. I think it's common advice for writers to read a lot, but honestly, I think quality is far more important than quantity. I don't have the opportunity to read too much, but whenever I do read, I am very conscientious and careful! Also, this is a practice you can apply to your own writing, too, which can be immensely helpful in identifying areas of growth :)

What was the most difficult part of writing reorienting?

Such a good question! I think the most difficult part was subtly introducing Padma and Parvati's background and history, without making the fic feel too info-dumpy, but while still giving enough information so the readers could connect to them and understand exactly how hurt Padma was. The second most difficult part (which was actually pretty comparable in difficulty) was making sure that Pada and Parvati's personalities were distinct enough, without playing into tropes of twins being opposites or identical, with nothing in between. I'm not sure how well I succeeded in either front haha :P

How did you go about plotting around the Take Me Home theme you worked with in reorienting?

Ahhh, another fantastic question! I started thinking a lot about exactly what 'home' was, to an immigrant, to a person who's just suffered war, and especially to a twin. I've always loved the concept of people being home, and I know from personal experience that my sister is truly like my home to me, and I wanted to illustrate that. I also wanted to illustrate how confusing of a concept home can be to an immigrant, especially if you were to go back to your supposed "home"land--which spurred the idea of Padma going "home" to India. And I've always thought that for someone who has just suffered through a war, wanting to find a different home is a very natural coping mechanism/emotional response. I really love the Take Me Home theme for the implicit sense of restoration and healing, which was why I wanted to set the fic in the Rebuilding period and focus on Padma and Parvati healing together.

In the Lion's Den, @TidalDragon's No Accounting for Taste took August's Featured Fic, and @Lacey Black was featured as this month's Leading Lion.

F E A T U R E D   F I C
|T I D A L  D R A G O N |

How did you come up with the idea for No Accounting for Taste?

It originated out of the Classic Fanfiction Tropes Challenge which was hosted by dirigibleplums way back in...2017? I immediately decided that I was going to use the College!AU trope because: (1) I'd never written it, but had always been interested in trying it and (2) plums' legendary 2.6A-verse had roommates as its central characters. So I wanted to really explore the Katie's growth as an MC not through a Hogwarts lens, but a college/uni lens which would let me explore roommates and friendships, while including SeekerBell, while developing her background a lot more and using that as fuel for a lot of the dynamics in the story.

Why accounting? Because I'm obsessed with good titles and (rightly or wrongly), I thought No Accounting for Taste would be a dope title for a story like it where the two characters in the central endgame ship are not terribly similar at first meeting/early development.

What’s your favorite genre to write, and why?

Oof. I enjoy writing a lot of genres from angst to adventure to mystery. I'm probably best at writing angst. But in my heart of hearts, my favorite is probably...romance. Why? That's complicated, but: (1) I'm an idealist when it comes to love, (2) I work with plenty of nastiness on the day-to-day, and (3) there's some definite wish fulfillment in the writing of a successful romance, but I won't dig into the background on that.

Describe your perfect writing environment.

Haha. Wherever my motivation can be found hiding? Honestly though, it would probably be a bookstore or small cafe/restaurant. I would probably get twitchy with a total lack of access to tech and it would sadly be distracting. At those places though, I don't have to deal with my heaviest tech distraction - console video gaming. I just need a desk/table with room for a laptop, journal-sized notebook, and both arms and relatively low to low-medium volume. Dim to no artificial light is also preferable.

What draws you to the pairing of Harry/Katie, aka SeekerBell?

How do I really shorten this up? A big part of it in the beginning was the fact that Katie is a largely blank slate. You have the connections there that can make the ship viable: both Gryffindors so they share the same underlying values and a shared interest (canonically: Quidditch; in NAFT: accounting - albeit different aspects). But you can also create something unique. So I see Katie as more of a grounding influence on Harry and more open to a more simpler, humbler life in actual practice than alternative pairings. She wants success too - very much so - but not at the costs that others might be willing to bear (beyond those which just come with close association with Harry). Ginny is more volatile, borderline arrogant, and ultimately is and wants to be a professional public figure. Though I'm not a fan of Hermione or Luna paired with Harry for entirely other reasons, I think Hermione (also arrogant, though that diminishes over the course of canon) has goals and a drive that are always going to put her in positions that invite even more scrutiny. Luna would just never provide the same stability that I think Harry needs (badly).

TL;DR: Harry and Katie share core values and key interest(s) but are more stable and complementary than other more well-known, much-beloved potential pairings.

Novels or one-shots: do you have a preference and if so, why?

One-shots because I can finish them? In all seriousness though, when it comes to writing, I prefer to write longer things because I like the greater flexibility. I have a lot more room to work on character development, even letting me set up how decisions that may seem superficially contradictory are justified by the characterization. Plus I like staggering multiple plot lines as the story progresses (see Evolution: The Unfinished Masterwork). Reading? Novels offline, but probably one-shots in FF. I think because the characters kind of "are who they are" outside of Next Gen and OCs (the former of which I just tend not to get into for various reasons), I prefer to see really sharp, impactful pieces with them.

What’s your defining Gryffindor trait?

My defining Gryffindor trait would probably be bravery above all else. I have been brave in all aspects of my life, and it's my bravery that gets me through some of the tougher decisions. Though if I allow it thinking too much can make that bravery waver so I try my best not to do that, the thinking thing.

What’s your favourite thing to do on the forums?

My favourite thing to do on the forums would be enter new story challenges. I'm always watching for the latest challenges and entering basically all of them.  😂 I find them useful to keeping my muse going.  It's similar to a prompt, even if I can only get out the shortest of pieces, it's inspired more writing so that can only be positive.

Tell us about the most Gryffindor thing you’ve done lately.

I asked a guy on a date.  It kay have backfire in the worst way, but it was definitely the most ballsy thing I've done in quite some time.

What three people (alive or dead) would you invite to a dinner party and why would they make the guest list?

Heath Ledger...but I would want him to have the shaggy curly hair...can I vote for him three times?

Ozzy Osbourne. Probably listened to his music more than I can count

JKR so I can convince her of the importance  surrounding the creation of a next gen or marauders (or both) tv series or book collections because ❤️❤️❤️❤️

What animal would be coolest to scale down to the size of a duck? Why?

A dragon, because a mini cute and cuddly ferocious beast would be adorable. Of course is have to train it, and feed it. But it would be lovely and wonderful.

EVA HI I AM HERE TO CELEBRATE YOUR AMAZING REVIEWING BECAUSE YOU ARE A LEGEND! This is a "Congratulations, you passed me" review :P I'm so proud of you!!! ♥♥♥♥♥ *passes on torch*

First I have to admit that understanding poetry is not my strong point :P but this is so beautiful that even if I don't know exactly what it is that is happening here, it kind of doesn't matter because it's more about the overall feeling of the piece? Like that first paragraph (stanza? what even is poem) is SO gorgeous, I'm obsessed with the words you used and the image it creates. I love the focus on the tiniest detail as you describe rain dripping off leaves, which is already a beautiful image, but I love that you zoom in on the cloud condensing to water which drips off the end of the leaf. This is not only exciting to my ecologist's heart as someone who once worked in a cloud forest, but it's also just freaking gorgeous imagery. Diamond ballets. That is honestly one of the most stunning descriptions of dew/rain that I've ever heard.

(How many times can I use the word beautiful in one review about an 80-word poem?)

Of course such a magical scene like the one you described in the first part is complemented really well by fairies, and this is a good time to mention that I love the fact that this poem is just one sentence, split up with the dashes kind of like fairies flitting from one place to another. It's a really cool way of incorporating the theme of the poem into the actual body of the poem.

The last paragraph + last line are really lovely, and kind of makes me think of someone remembering the dreams and imaginative curiosity of their childhood and passing it on to their own child, which is a lovely image.

This was so beautiful, Eva! I loved it. Thank you for sharing!

Congratulations on making Hufflepuff of the Month! How do you feel about this recognition?

It’s lovely to be recognized, but I feel like I already get enough of it, especially right after big events like this. Honesty I was watching the poll hoping that @just.a.willow.tree and I would tie, because we really have operated as a partnership the last two months, and I believe she deserves just as much recognition as me.

You've also just became a member of the staff. Congratulations! What are you most looking forward to about being a staffer?

Never letting the Hufflepuff members count to 20. I’m excited to help lead Hufflepuff in a different way than I traditionally have, not just focusing on trying to win events. I’m also really looking forward to working with the rest of the staff, and enjoying all the fun things I can do for our social media.

Quick! You're going under cover and can only take three things from your previous life. What do you choose?

I thought you meant diving under the covers in my bed which sounded really great... ah well. I think I would take mostly sentimental items: gloves I wore at a significant point in my life that fill me with feeling when I touch them, my old broken glasses, and on a more practical front, my fidget cube.

What's your favorite animal? If the zoo in your town let you name their new one, what would you name it?

My favorite animals are tigers and seals, and since they can be subdivided into land and sea animals, I absolve myself of any obligation to choose between them. By “the zoo in town” do you mean the one I work at? XD WELL we do currently have an incredibly adorable baby Zebra who is not yet named. Someone suggested he should be named Apollo, both because his father has a mythology based name and it’s currently the 50th anniversary of the Apollo mission. I like that idea, but fear his name will inevitably be more boring and less fitting.

You made some incredible videos for the House Cup finale. How did you learn to make videos?

Yayy I don’t normally get to talk about vidding here! I love to make fan videos for TV shows I obsess over. I started by making a handful when I was in high school that were Not Good, and a couple years ago I started up again, mostly doing Hannibal and Black Sails. These days I spend more time working on vids than fic, but my perfectionism keeps me from finishing most of what I start.

Tell us your top three Potterverse headcanons.

- everyone is gay

- nobody is straight

- unless I really don’t like them, then we don’t talk about it

If you had one day in the wizarding world, where would you go and what would you do?

Oh god. Probably hit the bookshops, like Flourish and Blotts, because how can I not? I need books, people. Aside from that, probably visit Godrics Hollow, Hogsmeade, Hogwarts and take a bunch of pictures so I can never forget I was actually there, because it seems so unreal.

Which fanfic is at the top of your reading list right now?

Well, I am currently re-reading @frombluetored's It's Tea Time series again, because why not, but when it comes to stories I haven't read (in full) yet, it's probably @down-in-flames's 9.9 out of 10, highly recommend. I just need to wait for new chapters on that one :(

Do you write a story from its start to its end, or do you jump around and write scenes out of order?

I tend to write from start-to-finish and just see how it goes because plotting is not my thing (hence... the bunch of wip's on my author page that have not been updated in forever I am so sorry). But I do have a story in the works (or... well, planning) which has come to me in snippets so as soon as my muse allows me to transcribe those scenes from thought to paper, I would have written that out of order, and then I need to work it all together. Which... will be interesting.

Who is your favorite character in Brooklyn 99 and why?

WHY DO YOU MAKE ME PICK? WHY?  Yeah, no, I can't decide on just one. Rosa, because she's just amazing and fierce and just stand by what she believes in and doesn't give a crap about others (or so she makes them believe). Amy because she's a geek and still just acing everything and being a rockstar and if I could be half the person she is then god. And Jake because how can i not love him?

ALSO DOUG JUDY. We all love Doug Judy.

What fantastic beast would you keep as a pet?

...does a kneazle count? Because while nifflers are cute, I would not have the patience to deal with them and kneazles are just like cats so... yeah/

Best part about being an Auror on the archive and why?

Getting sneak previews of chapters others need to wait for =D Kidding aside (though it is one of my favorite things), is just seeing so many amazing stories from all different members which I generally otherwise would not read at all (or maybe only with reviewing events but hey I'm staff so... that doesn't really go up for me anymore). It's a privilege to just read all of those brilliant stories and it can give you such a good insight in characters it's just... Brilliant, really!

What drew you to writing about Teddy & Victoire as a ship?

Their original dynamic in the books! They were totally painted as these two people that are childhood friends that became lovers, and while I mean no harm to those who do like the trope childhood friends to lovers, I thought it was kind of boring? It's why I didn't really write about them for a long time, and then I realized I've been taking a literal bat to canon for a while now, so why not them too? I still have those elements of friends to lovers in my stories (I still hold that strong romantic relationships come from strong friendships that are there to stay) but I really like playing with the circumstances of how they meet and how that might bleed into or affect their friendship. I do some of that in the Glass universe, but the childhood friends to lovers trope doesn't really stick, and the two have to start over again because it's been a while since they've last interacted.

Do you prefer a certain genre when writing? Why?

Romance and humor! Usually one of those two are present in my stories. Romance because it's the easiest for me to write (mostly because I treat the couples like they're friendships with some romantic elements), and also a way for me to live through my stories. And also sort of a way to put out my ideas of romance out into the world, even if they're not necessarily realistic. And humor because... I just really need some of that in my life? Humor is the hardest for me to write but it's also really rewarding because it sort of wired my brain into finding what's light and funny in my life rather than use the pessimistic lens that it always has, and then making me more pessimistic about my life.

What is the most exciting about writing Next-Gen Weasleys and why?

Sort of a cookie cutter answer, but I really like writing them because they're blank slates? I can project the characters that I want to write on them and still have them be somewhat loved, or have people come into my stories already liking the characters? Does that make sense? I don't know. I know that I especially like reading Next-Gen because I don't have to do all the legwork to love them like I want to, and ultimately, that's the reason why I like writing Next-Gen. Other than that, I don't really know what draws me to them, because usually I take the most fun thing to play with out of the Next-Gen era (the magic).

Favorite type of weather to write in?

I don't really have a favorite type of weather to write in because I'm usually at home in my room with the windows closed. Truth of the matter is is that I don't really know what the weather is like outside because I usually don't go outside, nor do I bother to check what it's like. I do have seasons though? I like writing during the summer and winter because that's usually when I have the most free time to write.

Such a lovely edition of In the Spotlight! I’m always impressed by how well these posts come together, knowing how much work they are :D Thank you for interviewing me and for that amazing review column about reorienting! I’m honored 🥰

I loved reading everyone else’s interviews as well :D I especially relate to Siân about concision being tremendously difficult (and the temptation to ramble about why is so strong, oh no).

I think you’ve picked a very divisive monthly dilemma question :P I’m 100% a Marvel fan! I connect more to the Marvel stories because the characters feel more human, and I’ve noticed an increasing trend in diverse representation in the new Marvel comics that I really really appreciate 😍 (also, SPIDER-MAN. Need I say more? :P)

Thanks for another great issue! The graphics are beautiful and the interviews and reviews are so interesting. @grumpy cat please please write the adventures of Odin and Ziggy.

I'm going to have to go with DC over Marvel--I've been a Batman fan since I was a kid.

I loved this edition! Also omg the graphics are absolutely beautiful, Deni. ❤️ I can't get over how good these blog posts are looking these days, with the color-coded questions and the formatting and the numerous additions to the content! I loved reading it all. Especially getting to know about all the fun little things happening in the other CRs; it's always good seeing which other members are getting recognition within their own Houses! Congratulations to everyone. ❤️

As for the dilemma, since I've basically only seen Marvel movies, I have to pick Marvel. Something about DC seems too gritty for me; I need good, cheesy, humorous superhero movies to get me through. :P
