Welcome to the HPFT bulletin, where you can find all of our major monthly announcements and information about upcoming events! This month, we've also got the results of our Fic Feud event and some announcements about new forum features and some major archive changes, including a tool to transfer any reviews you have back up from HPFF over to HPFT. (This is a bit of a long bulletin, so buckle up. ) If you're new, first and foremost: welcome to HPFT! It's awesome to have you with us. HPFanficTalk is a forum/archive - the forum is Harry Potter-themed (including a year-long house cup), but we talk about other fandoms, too, and the archive is multi-fandom/OF. We have a strong culture of support for other writers and feedback here, including a story help section, challenges, and reviewing events, so if you're a writer, you've come to the right place. A quick rundown to help you get started here on the forums: please post in the 'Welcome to HPFT' topic +here to say that you've read over the rules and understand them. You can specify your house in that post or in our sorting ceremony +here - once you do, we'll sort you into the right group so you can see a common room that only people in your house are allowed to see. You're welcome to post in your common room and/or in our introductions forum +here to introduce yourself if you'd like, and you may also find our +FAQs helpful. Enjoy your stay! Hufflepuff: 3449.5 Ravenclaw: 2200 Gryffindor: 1916.5 Slytherin: 1655 We already bumped the additions to the staff/prefect team from our April apps a week or so ago , but we'd like to officially welcome them to the staff team now (as well as announce a couple more changes)! @Levana and @victoria_anne have both joined the Muggle Liaison team! Maggie and Bianca both bring some great previous experience to the table, and our ML quartet is planning some amazing new things in the coming months. We're thrilled to have them aboard! In addition, @MegGonagall has decided to switch from her current role as Professor to being a full time member of the Auror team! @PaulaTheProkaryote is also joining the validating team part-time in addition to her Muggle Liaison duties, and @TidalDragon and @Alopex will be joining the moderating team part-time. We're also very excited to add @Slytherinchica08 to the prefect team; anyone who's seen Erica around the forums knows how friendly (and animal friendly!) she is, and we're psyched to have her help. Enjoy your new roles, everyone! Please note that in the original version of the bulletin, Paula, Meg, and Kevin had all joined the Auror team part-time, and we had no part-time Professors. We have a couple new features on the forums that we'd like to introduce you to! Skins. Our wonderful headmaster @Alopex uploaded two new forum themes/skins earlier this month, so you now have three to choose from (including the default). You can find the announcement +here, and the option to change your theme at the very bottom of the forums. Holly did an amazing job, and we're so psyched to have them! Badges. HPFT has some of the most dedicated, hard-working, and talented writers/reviewers in the fanfiction community, and we've decided to add a feature that formally recognizes that. It's entirely opt-in. If you choose to participate, you'll be able to claim badges for various accomplishments and milestones that you reach, events you participate in, and leadership roles that you've filled. You can find more information about our badges and how to claim them in the new badge sub-forum +here; we'll be making them visible over the course of the next hour or so. 3. NaNo Nests. In addition, if you participated in Camp NaNo and would like your Novel Nest either moved to our +Writing Journal section (if you don't already have a journal) or merged with your regular writing journal (if you do), please post a comment in your NaNo Nest by May 7. If you don't comment by then but change your mind later, you can just contact any Professor - they'll be happy to move it for you, even if the Nest has been hidden. This month we have several notices, announcements, and reminders in regards to our Archives! Review Transfers from HPFF - @toomanycurls has been working on a system to make transferring of any reviews you'd gotten on HPFF to HPFT over the years much easier! With this system, you won’t have to copy and paste everything manually at the right story, but it gets done for you! You can find the post about it +here; if you follow the instructions there, your reviews will be moved in the next month of so (depending on demand). In addition, we would also like to remind you about +this poll in regards to possible new functions on the archives if you haven't seen it yet! Archive Advisories - There are two impending changes in regards to archive advisories that will be implemented shortly. The changes will be regarding two of the advisories: the Hate Speech advisory, and the Sexual Assault advisory. Based on member feedback a couple months and internal discussion, we shall be splitting the Hate Speech advisory into two advisories: Hate Speech and Derogatory Language. The first will be reserved for very serious slurs that are universally seen as problematic, and the second will be for other slurs. Changes will be implemented when it comes to ratings as well (some stories, for instance, will now be fine with a T rating instead of an M). Based on internal discussion, we shall be changing the Sexual Assault advisory into two categories: Consent Issues (Severe) - e.g., depictions of rape, mentions of child abuse - and Consent Issues (Mild/Moderate) - e.g., unwanted kissing, grey consent areas, etc. The second will be allowed at both T and M ratings. The new tags have been posted, and the site guidelines have been updated. You can also check the +consent issues tutorial and the +profanity/slur tutorial for further details. Reminders: Lastly, the Validators would like to remind you all to please read the emails we send you after we validate your stories. In all rejections and some acceptances, notes will be written in to point you to specific areas of concern. In rejections, those need to be changed for us to validate your story. Here are a few reminders for everyone to keep in mind: If you had a chapter rejected for a rating that needs to be changed or an advisory that needs to be added, please keep in mind that the software won't register changes unless a space (or something similar) has been added to the end of the chapter and saved. If this isn’t done, the chapter won’t go back into the queue. Please also keep in mind that if you throw in a lot of chapters of the same story into the queue (which is fine!) and we have to reject one of those, we will leave the rest of the chapters alone until the necessary changes have been made. This is to avoid having to reject multiple chapters of the same story for the same reason, as that would be very demotivating and unfairly impact your ability to get CA status later. Do keep in mind that the rejection/acceptance emails will sometimes come into your spam box. Do check that too if your chapter isn't up and it's been a week (for shorter stories/individual chapters) or two weeks (for novels). If it takes longer than that to get validated and you haven’t gotten an email or a previous chapter hasn’t been rejected, feel free to reach out to @abhorsen., @BellaLestrange87, @Ineke, or @Renacerá on the forums or email us at email@example.com! HPFT is now on facebook! You can find the page +here. It's yearly house award season! All four houses are either in the process of running their awards or are about to start them. Stop into your common room for more information if you already have a house. If you don't but would like to join one, contact @abhorsen., @Alopex, or @toomanycurls - we'll get you sorted ASAP! Our first Head Student this month has been wonderful on the archive and the forums over the past couple months! On the archive side, they've posted a number of reviews and uploaded more than a dozen great stories, and on the forum side, they're also posting all over the place, including starting some really interesting topics that we've all gravitated toward! <3 Congratulations to... @facingthenorthwind! Nix has also been keeping our validators busy (and very entertained!) with the stories she's been posting to the archive, and she's left many reviews over the past month as well. In addition, she's a great member on the forums, participating in a number of threads in both her common room and the broader HPFT forums. This is very deserved, and please join us in congratulating... @Nix! Congratulations again to both of you. We're all so lucky to have you in this community! Please PM me with which of your stories you'd like us to feature next month! The Prefects have decided to honor one of our amazing Aurors for May’s Order of Merlin! And this month, the winner is…. @Ineke! You know her for her undeniable enthusiasm, love for Cursed Child, and, of course, her outstanding dedication to our archive. When a series of unfortunate events rolled out, causing a wonderful spike in membership for both our forums and our archives, Ineke didn’t let that slow her down. She rose to the challenge and in the month of April alone, has validated well over 280 chapters! Please take a moment to thank Ineke for all she does on the forums, but especially the queue, for keeping wait-times down while always encouraging authors to submit new stories and chapters despite the high number of chapters in the queue. We can’t imagine our archive without you, so thank you for all you do! We are very excited to announce the winners of Fic Feud, this year’s staff-hosted writing competition! As a quick run-down, participants in the competition were assigned a partner, with whom they had to write a two-to-four chapter story, with four elements chosen for each chapter. To make it more difficult, they were able to sabotage another team by either assigning or blocking elements. Coming in with the top score overall are @pookha & @Levana for their story A Rescue In Space And Time (M)! This story really stood out to judges on the creativity/difficult elements front and scored strongly in that area. These two have each earned 75 points for their house (Ravenclaw & Hufflepuff), in addition to 5 points each for the chapters they wrote. Our runners-up are @Rumpelstiltskin & @victoria_anne with their story Mask of Truth! This story earned the highest score in cohesiveness. Each of them has earned 50 points for their house (Slytherin & Hufflepuff), in addition to the 5 points each for the chapters they wrote. Our other four entries are listed below. Each earned 5 participation points for the author’s house. This has resulted in 12.5 points for Gryffindor, 27.5 for Hufflepuff, 15 for Ravenclaw, and 10 for Slytherin. Marriage Isn’t A Fairytale by @Alexis Black & @forever_dreaming Decay Theory by @Dojh167 & @Aphoride Everlasting… by @StarFeather & @just.a.willow.tree The Madness of Magic (M) by @Pixileanin & @Phoenix Potioneer And just some additional recognitions: We’d like to extend our congratulations to @StarFeather, who had the highest focus-on-elements score by a decent margin. We’d also like to recognize the team of @Pixileanin & @Phoenix Potioneer for being the only team to write more than two chapters. For those curious about the scoring rubric/process: May's SotM goes to... @Chelts-rhj for her story Stand Tall! Alba Williamson is a cross-word loving Ravenclaw in her seventh year at Hogwarts. Pity is her nemisis, and pride is her guiding light. Determined to keep her head up through thick and thin, she struggles with the challenges of cerebral palsy. Though her best friend James helps as much as he can, things are sure to change with the Triwizard Tournament right around the corner. banner by @abhorsen. Every month, HPFT runs Fic Night, where a staff member reads a nominated fic from one of our members. You can check out @TidalDragon reading Constellations by @Unwritten Curse for April's Fic Night +here if you haven't seen it yet! Welcome to the HPFT bulletin, where you can find all of our major monthly announcements and information about upcoming events! This month, we've also got some information for authors in light of the HPFF shutdown. If you're new, first and foremost: welcome to HPFT! Hufflepuff: 3394.5 Ravenclaw: 2090 Gryffindor: 1886.5 Slytherin: 1570 We're very sad to announce that @BlackPixie is stepping down from their position as Slytherin prefect. Hayden has done an amazing job and is a wonderful member of Slytherin house. We're very happy, however, to announce that @just.a.willow.tree will be stepping up to become a prefect for Hufflepuff House - Eva's been incredibly active since joining the site late last year, and we're excited to have her on the team! Thank you, Hayden! Enjoy your new role, Eva! We'll be included a proper announcement in May's newsletter, but we wanted to give a quick shout out now to @Levana, @victoria_anne, and @Slytherinchica08, who will be joining the team - Maggie and Bianca as Muggle Liaisons, and Erica as a prefect. We're reopening staff/prefect applications! Rather than post applications whenever a position opens up, we post an application using for all site staff roles every three months. Any positions that need to be filled over the following three months are filled using responses to that application, so if you're interested in joining the staff or prefect team, you should absolutely apply. You're welcome to apply to as many roles on the application as you're interested in, and we don't have any restrictions based on post count or time you've spent as a member. You can find the application +here. If you would like to apply, please do so by April 11, 11:59pm GMT. If you'd like to review the full breakdown of responsibilities/more details about how we fill staff/prefect positions, you can find a blog entry about it +here. Thank you! As many of you know, HPFF announced that it will be closing its doors at the end of April. We know that many of our members - existing, returning, and new alike - have used the site over the many years that it's been active, and we've discussed as a staff how best to help everyone through the transition. We'll be posting more details in the coming days with more details, but the first thing to watch out for is this: @toomanycurls has been working on a way for us to transfer all of your HPFF reviews pretty quickly and painlessly. We've tested it out on several stories, and it works. She's putting the final touches on it now, and we should be rolling it out in the next few days. When we post the topic, we'll post announcements on the forum, archive, and social media, so just make sure you're checking in on one or more of those spaces if that's something you're interested in. In more minor news, we've added a preferred pronoun field to forum profiles. It's totally optional, but if you'd like to fill it out, you're very welcome to. We know a lot of members are transferring stories over from HPFF, and we're psyched to see them! We do want to emphasize that while HPFT also has a moderated queue, we do have very different rules, so we strongly encourage you to read them over +here. To give a couple quick highlights (including some things that aren't rules but are more cultural): We like diversity, including (but not limited to) sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, and disability. While our archive is moderated and there are some things that we don't allow, we're fairly permissive in what we do allow in terms of sexual content as well as issues like self-harm. Please check out the archive site guidelines for details, but if you've got some fairly graphic content (including content that wasn't allowed on HPFF), don't automatically assume it won't be accepted. As many of you know, we have an open queue - i.e., you can submit as many chapters to the queue at once as you'd like. (Truly - as many as you'd like. If it's easiest for you to put 100 chapters in at once, that's totally fine.) As mentioned above, our archive is multi-fandom. We don't accept Disney-based material (other than parodies) for legal reasons, but we'll accept fanfiction from just about any other fandom as well as original fiction. We're happy to add tags for any fandom/character/ship that has at least one story on the archive. If you have a story written that requires one or more of those tags that we don't have yet, just post in the Tag Request thread +here. Your friendly neighborhood admin will add them for you. We'd also like to mention to people who participated in the hate speech feedback thread early in March that we really appreciated their feedback! We've been discussing the results as a staff and will be announcing some changes in May. Camp NaNo is here! Check out the Crazies' Cafe +here to participate. We're also still in the process of our Fic Feud event - we can't wait to see what participants come up with! Our first Head Student this month has been incredibly active on both the forums and the archive since she joined in January. She's posted some very long and thorough reviews, a few terrific stories, and between her status updates, game posts, and general contributions to discussions, she's a wonderful presence around the site. Please give it up for... @Levana! Our second Head Student this month also joined the site in January, and she's also already been an amazing presence in the community. Our aurors have loved coming across her stories in the queue since then, and she's also been very active in games, discussions, and status updates. Please join us in congratulating... @Phoenix Potioneer! Congratulations again to you both, and thank you for being such wonderful members of the community. <3 Please PM me with which of your stories you'd like us to feature next month! For this month’s Order of Merlin award, the Prefects have chosen our wonderful, hardworking Muggle Liaison Assistant. Please join me in congratulating… RoxiMalfoy! You know her for her mastery of emoji usage and general enthusiasm, but we’d also like to recognize Deana for her hard work as one of our Muggle Liaisons. She works very hard to help keep our social media active and up to date, including recently updating our SnapChat bitmoji to a rather friendly Harry as a new way to interact with our members. She’s also done a great job of being active amongst not just her fellow Slytherins by helping with some of their common room activities, but across the site as a whole by greeting new members and spreading the love. Her consistency and her activity is definitely noticed and much appreciated. Thank you, Deana, for everything you do. We’re very lucky to have her amongst our staff! - the prefects April's SotM goes to @Crimson Quill for her story Letter to the Lost (M)! People didn't laugh any more, at least not in front of Sirius. Sirius craved to laugh again but the sound just wouldn't come. ~~ Fic Feud!! ~~ All right, feuders, it is time to reveal partners and get started with planning and writing! First, about the requirements. Stories must be 2 to 4 chapters long, with each chapter 1000 to 4000 words long. Stories must be posted to the HPFT archive by April 15, with both you and your partner listed as an author. You must contribute at least 1000 words. You may collaborate with your partner on chapters, but we must be able to tell who wrote what. Each chapter must be based around 4 elements from at least 3 different categories (so you will use a minimum of 8 elements for your story). The categories: Sentence(s) to include - any EXCEPT the one you submitted; you can edit tenses/pronouns to make it fit your story Character(s) - any canon Genre(s) - from our archive, EXCEPT general and micro-fiction Inclusivity(ies) - from our archive Theme(s) - from our archive As a reminder, you can obviously go the easy route with picking elements that very easily fit together (e.g. questioning identity with genderfluid/genderqueer, marriage with romance, war with PTSD). However, we challenge you to step outside the most obvious choices and blow us away with more creative combinations! About the sabotages: You have two choices here. You and your partner must decide if you want to force your sabotagees to include 1 element OR block them from including 3 elements. Post the sabotage you are giving in this thread by March 12. Then, taking into account the sabotage you received, post your final choice about which elements you will use by March 15. About scoring: Each chapter written will receive participation points just like challenges do. In addition, each person will be judged on creativity, focus on elements, plot cohesiveness, characterization, and mechanics. (If you write more than one chapter, your scores will be averaged.) Your story's score will be the sum of your score and your partner's score. About teamwork: If you are having difficulty communicating with your partner, and it doesn't seem like they will be able to follow through, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE contact me or any other staff member with your concerns. Likewise, if something comes up in your life and you need to drop out, let us know. We do have some lovely back-up writer volunteers, so we should be able to find a new partner if it comes to that. Now, without further ado, here finally are the partners! You will be sabotaging the group BELOW you on the list. @Alexis Black & @NPE @Aphoride & @Dojh167 @clevernotbrilliant & @MalfoysAngel @just.a.willow.tree & @StarFeather @Levana & @pookha @Phoenix Potioneer & @Pixileanin @Rumpelstiltskin & @victoria_anne @ShazaLupin & @Unwritten Curse (you sabotage Alexis Black & NPE) If these forms are helpful, have at 'em. Sabotages due by March 12 Your choices on elements are due March 15
~~ Fic Feud!! ~~ Welcome to Fic Feud! Last year's Throw Down the Gauntlet was a very popular event, so we have brought you yet another exciting partner-based writing competition! With your assigned partner, you must write a story between 2 and 4 chapters long by April 15. Individually, you must contribute at least 1000 words. (If you read that and felt intimidated and like this isn't the event for you, you can still submit a sentence (keep reading for details). We also want some back-up writers, so if you're more of a "maybe" than a "taker" at the moment, consider signing up for that.) Here is how it will work: Stories must be posted on our archive with both you and your partner listed as an author. Each chapter must be between 1000 and 4000 words in length and be based around 4 elements from at least 3 different categories. The twist is that you will be assigning another group a sabotage (and receiving one yourself), to force or prevent choosing certain elements. For your reference, the five categories will be: Sentence(s) to include - to be submitted by members; you can edit tenses/pronouns to make it fit your story Character(s) - any canon Genre(s) - from our archive, EXCEPT general and micro-fiction Inclusivity(ies) - from our archive Theme(s) - from our archive We will list this out in more detail once the sentences are submitted, when we announce partners and who you will be sabotaging. Obviously, you can go the easy route with picking elements that very easily fit together (e.g. questioning identity with genderfluid/genderqueer, marriage with romance, war with PTSD). However, we don't want to see you stick to the easy route! We challenge you to step outside the most obvious choices and blow us away with more creative combinations! Creativity will be a component of your score, so don't give away those points by playing it safe. A quick overview about points: Points will be awarded two ways—for participation and placement/winning. The participation points will be given for every completed chapter, whereas placement will be determined by judging each story. Annnnd the schedule: March 1 - 8 Click here to fill out a form to submit a sentence participants may choose to include in their stories (you may only submit one). You do NOT need to participate as a writer to submit a sentence! March 1 - 8 If you would like to participate, reply to this topic to sign up. Remember, THIS IS NOT A SOLO ACTIVITY, so it is very important that you are able to FOLLOW THROUGH FOR YOUR PARTNER. You can also sign up as a back-up writer. These are the people we will be asking to help out should anyone have something come up and need to drop out of the competition. Just reply to this topic saying you wish to be a back-up writer rather than a full participant. March 10 Partners will be announced. You will also learn which other pair you will get to sabotage. You can start writing right away if you wish, but just remember that you may need to alter your plan depending on what sabotage you receive. March 12 Sabotages are due. If you don't post your sabotages in time, the group you are sabotaging can pick whatever elements they want without restriction. March 15 Final decisions about your elements are due. We do need you to post these up front because it's too easy to write something and pick what fits afterward. April 15 Competition ends! There is no sign-up form. Just reply to this topic saying if you are a participant or a back-up writer.
