Bunbury
"Let's see," said the hat, sliding past Bunbury's eyes and obscuring her view of the Hall. "You positively recoil from toil. And indeed from most things, ruling out Hufflepuff and Gryffindor." "Perhaps," suggested Bunbury hopefully, "I possess wit beyond measure and all that?" "I think not," sneered the hat. "No, for you there can only be one choice. . .SLYTHERIN!"
KJ Cartmell
I'm hardworking and loyal to my friends. I still keep in touch with people I've known from primary school, and I've been married now for over 27 years. So, yes, I'm a Hufflepuff, as is my main hero, Liam Wren. I have a good understanding of Slytherins, however. (In my other life, I work in sales, which is full of Slytherins.) I have some great Slytherin characters, and I enjoy telling their stories.
CheekyTorah-Lex
An older lady walked from behind the long dining table at the front of the room to stand before the group of students before her. She had in her hands a rather old looking hat as she addressed the children. Lacey Avery looked around her at the long tables full of students. Ravenclaw, Huffle Puff, Gryffindor and Slytherin. Two of which were her most likely of options, considering both her parents were from Slytherin House themselves she was pretty sure that’s where she should end up. The woman, who had introduced herself as Professor McGonagall, said various names and one by one students were sorted. Lacey noticed a very nice looking boy looking anxiously at the hat; waiting for his turn. He was well dressed with dark hair and had an air about him that set him apart from others. He was talking with a taller boy with glasses and they seemed to be having a very animated conversation. She knew who that was. His name was James Potter. She had heard the girls talking about him on the ride into Hogwarts. The boys suddenly looked your way. James flashed you an amused smile, obviously having caught you staring. The professor called the name “Sirius Black” and she watched the boy she didn’t know, who she now decided was quite fit, sit down in the chair. She knew of the House of Black well. Her parents ensured Lacey knew of all the right sort of people. The professor had the hat positioned right above the chair so when she dropped it it fell right atop his head. The hat took longer to sort him then it did other students but soon he was announced to be in Gryffindor. James Potter, Lily Evans, Peter Pettigrew and a couple others were called and one by one they were all sorted into Gryffindor House. “Lacey Avery?” Professor McGonagall gave her a rather incredulous look as she made her way to the front of the room. She pretended not to notice the professor look back at the Headmaster and share a secret look with him. Lacey didn’t know what exactly the look meant, but was certain it was about her, or likely her family name. Lacey was not quite sure she was ready for this but the hat fell upon her head and she knew, ready or not, it was time for her to be placed in a house. “Ahh, an Avery I see, cunning and resourceful I see no doubt, but courageous and honourable by far is your strongest points, where to put you then my dear.” she noticed the students listening to the hat speak. *Slytherin right?* she thought to herself, her parents wouldn’t have it any other way. ”You would do well in Gryffindor you know. You could be a great Hero!” *My parents would die if they heard this, no it’s has to be Slytherin! Please? Slytherin!* She thought as loudly as possible to get the message across to the hat how dire it was that she be placed in Slytherin. ”if you’re sure, then it will be ...Slytherin ...” the hat seemed very obviously displeased with her choice but honoured it nonetheless. She stood up and noticed a very curious House of Black boy staring at her. She guessed it wasn’t every day someone passed up the opportunity to be a perfect little Gryffindor.
Guest Noelle Zingarella
“Zingarella, Noelle,” Professor McGonagall’s crisp voice announced. I was shifting around, unable to stand still while I waited for my name to be called. In a way, it was good to always be last. It meant that whatever I was waiting for would finally be over by the time it was my turn. On the other hand, it also meant that I had plenty of time for my anxiety to build while I stood there watching everyone else. I was very good at hiding my anxiety. Whenever I told people that I was nervous, they always seemed surprised. “It’s all on the inside,” I would say with a smile. It was all on the inside now, my heart racing, my hands numb as I approached the sorting hat. I wished that we didn’t have to do this in front of the whole school. I was the first witch in my family and no one had any experience with this world. I had been a bit surprised that my parents had let me come to Hogwarts, but I supposed that they were just happy to have me out of their hair. They never seemed to like me very much. I took a deep breath and sat down on the stool. Professor McGonagall put the hat on my head and it promptly fell over my eyes. It felt warm and comfortable, like an old t-shirt. I didn’t know if I should feel grateful that I didn’t have to look at the room for a few minutes, or claustrophobic. Before I could settle on one or the other, I jumped as I heard a voice inside my head. “Hmmm…interesting,” the hat was saying. “Some brains…rather loyal…quite determined….but it looks like bravery is your strongest point….” “That can’t be right,” I thought back. “No offense, I mean…” “None taken, none taken, but yes, I think bravery will have to define you.” “But I’m afraid of everything!” I protested. “Being brave doesn’t mean that you lack fear,” the hat whispered in my brain. “Being brave simply means that you do what is necessary in spite of your fear.” “Oh…” “So, better be—-GRYFFINDOR!!” I flinched as the hat shouted its decision and McGonigall removed it from my head. My face was burning as I walked sheepishly over to the table of the other cheering Gryffindors. I tried to smile, but as I looked at them, I wondered if I could possibly fit in with them. As I approached the table, most of the Gryffindors turned their attention to the staff table. One pudgy boy, a few years older than me, seemed to notice my discomfort though. He gave me a shy smile and gestured to the empty chair next to him. “You can sit here,” he said, turning a bit red at his boldness. “Thanks,” I answered. “I’m Noelle.” “I’m Neville.” We shook hands and I felt my heart start to calm down. Maybe things wouldn’t be so bad here after all.

singmetothesun
The hat was placed on my head and I looked confidently out over the many faces in the Great Hall. I knew which house I was heading to and I was very excited. "Mmm, yes, not much to sift through here. You are most definitely destined for the House of the Just and Fair. You can get into conflict but you also try and see every side. You never back down from a challenge even if you don't always succeed, and your loyalty to those you hold dear is unbounded." I crossed my fingers. Please, please, please! "HUFFLEPUFF!" I beamed, hopping off the stool and over to the home of the Badgers.

evilqueen
I was the first name called, and although the instructions had been simple, I felt sure that I had misheard something vital as I walked up to where the stool was and took my place. The hat came to rest upon my head just as I glance around at everyone's face on me before the brim slipped down, landing against the bridge of my nose. There was a moment where I swore I heard a chuckle in my ear, before, "Oh yes, I know where to place you. You'll do well in SLYTHERIN!"

Guest pookha
The Sorting Ceremony was done, and the children and teachers had all filed out. The grizzled Auror checked the Great Hall carefully, looking for anyone Charmed or hidden. Satisfied, he started to leave, but then noticed the Sorting Hat still rested on its stool He remembered clearly when it had said, “Ravenclaw!” after a short deliberation. It had wanted to put him in Slytherin, but he’d flatly refused. His parents had told him about a growing concern with Slytherins supporting the self-styled Lord Voldemort and that the war was only likely to continue. He would never support Lord Voldemort and from inside Slytherin it would be impossible to escape the consequences of it. He couldn’t have known that just two years later, Voldemort would be apparently dead (he came back, the bastard!) and the war would be over. Before he knew what he was doing, he scooped up the Hat, sat on the stool and put it on. “Ah, Carl! Good to see you back. A decorated Auror now, see Ravenclaw was good for you.” “Should I have let you put me in Slytherin,” Carl thought back to it. “Well, I don’t make mistakes, so if I said Ravenclaw, then it was right.” “I’ve done well for myself, married, happy, but no children. I just couldn’t see bringing them into this world.” The Hat humphed. “That’s your decision. Why did you put me on?” “I just had to know if I should have been Slytherin. Sometimes I don’t think I know the difference between intelligent and cunning.” “It’s small and you fell on the intelligent side back then.” “And now?” Carl asked. The Hat was silent for a bit, and Carl could feel it poking about in his head, much like someone using Legilimency. “Now, I’d say Slytherin as first choice still. You’re intelligent, yes, but also judgmental. But, you’ve also learned over the years and changed your mind when presented with better facts. You’ve managed your career with a Slytherin’s political means and have made sure that you got the credit you deserved when you deserved it. You also valued what was right over loyalty to the Aurors, secretly turning in Death-Eaters who had infiltrated. Not brave, not touchy-feely. You can only be:” “SLYTHERIN!” It shouted in the silent hall, its voice echoing. Carl rose, took off the Hat, sat it on the stool and made one last pass around the Great Hall. Whistling, he made his way around the hallways to check them. There would always be an Auror at Hogwarts now on the order of Harry Potter, the new head of the DMLE. An official request to change my house to Slytherin, please, after a lot of thought about this.
newsbypostcard
"Oh? What do we have here. Some ambition." "No," I corrected. "Well—maybe, technically speaking. It's not power I crave, exactly, but success on my own terms. In the dictionary sense of the word—" "Ravenclaw," the hat said tiredly.

PinsandKneazles
"Well well well" said the Sorting Hat pleasantly. "You're late. I rather expected you to return sooner than this" "You ... expected?" "Well, you always hated the cold. That tower ... brrr." The Hat gave a shudder. A moment of silence fell. Then "I've changed" I whispered. "No, you haven't" replied the Hat, "but your self-recognition has" "I ... I'm not sure where I belong any more" "Somewhere warmer" said the Hat cheerfully. "Which rules out Slytherin." "But I'm neither friendly, courageous nor hardworking" I said despondently. "And if I have decided to change House, then surely that shows I'm not loyal either" "Sometimes, it's not about what qualities you already have, but what you stand to learn from others" replied the Hat smartly. "I think I know where to send you" "Oh?" My heart fluttered hopefully. "So I do belong somewhere, then?" The Hat chuckled. I caught a whiff of honey in the air and was enveloped with warmth at the same moment that the Hat declared "HUFFLEPUFF" (New name, new beginning; could I change house, please?)
RonsGirlFriday
The Hat was perturbed. What are you doing? it demanded. Are you thinking about game theory?? Uh-huh, thought RGF absently. Well, stop it! This is important. RGF tried to clear her mind. It was difficult. Try not to think of an elephant. Suddenly, the Hat snickered. Were hats supposed to snicker? Do you really organize your shirts by occasion and then by sleeve length? You forgot color after sleeve length. Get off this chair, you nutter. "RAVENCLAW!" Guest Noelle Zingarella
“Peppermint Drops,” I whisper, flinching as the griffin guarding Headmaster Dumbledore’s office grinds open, echoing obnoxiously through the deserted hallway. “Come on, come on,” I mutter impatiently, my eyes darting around nervously, sure I’m about to be caught and sentenced to months of detention—or worse—expelled. But none of those things happen. In another instant, I’m inside the Headmaster’s office, tiptoeing through the dark to the shelf where the old Sorting Hat sits, snoring lightly along with the sleeping portraits. I grit my teeth and snatch the Hat, putting it on my head and praying my luck will hold. “What’s this?” the Hat says to me, startled awake. “What do you want?” “I want to change houses,” I reply. “It’s the middle of the night and the middle of the school year!” “And?” “And how rude of you to wake me.” “Yes, well, I am sorry about that, but seeing as you are awake, can you please resort me?” The Hat shifts on my head—a very strange sensation—and says, “Oh bother it, where do you want to go?” “Slytherin, please.” “Slytherin? I don’t know about that. You’re completely lacking in subtlety.” “That is true, but…” “And you’re sadly impulsive; do you ever think before you act?” “Well…I don’t know, but…” “And you’re extremely literal minded.” “Look, I just want to, and I’m going to do it! I don’t care what you say!” The Hat starts chuckling, and the sound tickles the inside of my brain. “You’ll do,” it says. “You’ll do just fine.” All this to say; please switch me to
tatapb
"You’re a mixed bag, aren’t you? Quitting your very stable job for a pipe dream… some might call that brave, wouldn’t they?" "Some call it brave, I still think it’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever done." "Ravenclaw’s off the table, I see. You’re curious about some things, sure, but that 'some' is sorely lacking. Arithmancy really isn’t your cup of tea, is it?" "I have an Outstanding N.E.W.T. in it that says otherwise." "You hated every single second of it,” the Hat pointed out. “You’re getting hives right now just thinking about those three years you... ah, yes, the word you're thinking is 'wasted'. Three years you 'wasted' learning Arithmancy and the subsequent two years practicing it. Definitely not a Ravenclaw." "Stable career, financial prospects… I’d have been an idiot not to go for it." "And yet you quit because it wasn’t enough." "That and I really did hate it." "Why not Gryffindor then?" "There was nothing brave or reckless about it. It was just… like you said, not enough." "I see. And this artsy thing you’re doing now, is that enough?" "Probably not. But it’s far more interesting than Arithmancy and I’m not half-bad at it. People say--" "People... make you anxious, don’t they? And yet you're desperate for their approval--" "Is this a weird therapy session or are you going to sort me?" "I was just pointing out the obvious. You’re also not very hardworking, are you? You basically quit anything you’re not immediately… what was it? Half-good at." "You make me sound so basic. Also a bit pathetic." "Let’s face it, people usually are. That’s why we only need four Houses." "I resent that." "Of course you would," the Hat replied in condescending tones. "You’re under the misguided impression that you’re special and that everyone else is just dull as a spoon for not realising it. All you want is praise and love and--" "Has anyone told you that you’re kind of a bully?" "Often. Usually by self-important ninnies that I end up sorting into SLYTHERIN!" Ravenclaw_scientist
The frizzy haired girl stumbled towards the bench and felt the hat slip over her head. She was grateful that the uncontrollable mess of curls finally had some use of holding it above her eyes, so she could continue to take in everything the Great Hall had to offer. She had been thinking about which house she belonged in since she was seven years old and genuinely enjoying her first proper assessments- a chance to show off without having to speak up in front of thirty judgemental muggle children. She hopped that there would be many more opportunities like this at Hogwarts and she knew she would still be doing the best. "You've got a long way to go." The girl frowned. Excuse me? "You won't stay this narrow minded. People will come and go in your life and you'll leave this school a completed different person as you are now." No, I'm smart. I've been wearing blue for years in preparation for this. "I can see that, but perhaps I should put you somewhere that you can be forced to be a little more than what you are now? There's plenty of courage in there, and a thirst to change things that are going wrong." Is there? "Ah, I see you're not ready to embrace that. No matter, I'll do what I can but don't forget those words." You'll do what? "Ravenclaw!" The hat called. The girl sat for a second while the hat was removed and mentally repaired the traumatic near-miss experience of being taken away from her own people before she had the chance to find them. She ran over to the sea of blue, ready to embrace the quiet confidence and unapologetic nerdiness of the eagles. She could worry about her other personality traits after school. ____________ And that's just what she did! Ravenclaw please!
