The ABC Drabble Challenge
September 1, 2020

A drabble is a short work of fiction of precisely 100 words in length. The purpose of the drabble is brevity, testing the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in a confined space.

If that's a given (and it's from Wikipedia, so it must be!), then this challenge should help you to explore drabbles for yourself! Whether you're a seasoned drabble writer or totally new to them, the purpose of The ABC Drabble Challenge is to get you out of your comfort zone and into the realm of drabble mastery.

Details

For this challenge, you will write 26 drabbles around a central theme of your choosing. This can be an actual theme from the archives (e.g. addiction, forgiveness, marriage, war, etc.), or some other unifying element (e.g. a pairing, a setting, an action—like first kisses, etc.). If you have trouble choosing or deciding, please feel free to ask! I'm happy to provide suggestions or help you decide between different ideas. You will choose "titles" for each drabble by choosing a word that begins with each letter of the alphabet. The drabbles can be posted as chapters in a story collection or as one chapter with each drabble following the previous (but not as continuations of each other, of course, since drabbles should be able to stand alone). So, in sum:

  • Write 26 drabbles, one for each letter of the alphabet.
    • Each drabble should be between 100 and 200 words.
    • All ratings and warnings are accepted.
    • If you'd like to write a fandom other than HP or OF, please confirm with me ahead of time to be sure I'm familiar with it.
  • Include a unifying element to the collection.
    • When you submit your entry, please let me know what unites the drabbles.
    • If you're unsure of your unifying element, please feel free to ask questions before you write!
  • Submit by September 1, 2020.
    • Multiple entries are allowed.
    • You may combine with other challenges.
    • Since this challenge is rather specific, previously written works likely won't fit the requirements.

Rewards

I will review every entry, and I hope to provide entrants and winners with award graphics (more info on that later). The winners of the challenge will receive additional reviews on stories of their choosing!

  • Third Place: 2 reviews
  • Second Place3 reviews
  • First place: 5 reviews

I’ll give this a try! I’m probably going to do OF (either my fantasy universe or my sci-fi screenplay universe) if that’s chill. :)

Hi, Emily! Quick question about the titles for the drabbles—does each have to be one word? 💛

Not at all! Just as long as it's clear that each letter is represented in order in the titles. If that makes sense?

@VaguelyCreativeName - So many 'Puffs! Yay!

I'm gonna put a maybe down and cross my fingers.

Muse has been iffy... this may be a perk (or prod) to it!

Hey there.

I'm trying to do this and I have a question about the rules.

So my theme is "babyhood" and despite the drabbles being able to stand alone there's automatically a logical order they'd happen in - i.e. a drabble about birth vs a drabble about crawling or eating … So should I

– put the drabbles in alphabetical order of their titles, ignoring the chronological order?
– put the drabbles in chronological order, ignoring the order of titles?
– put the drabbles in alphabetical order and make sure the chronological order matches too?

Hmm. I don't think it would matter too much if they aren't in "logical/chronological" order. I was imagining people would do alphabetical order, but if you'd prefer to organize them differently, I don't mind. I hope that answer helps!
